This is well easy to do in Ableton. Just right click the fader and hit "Show Automation in New Lane". It will show up in the designated track and you can draw the curves in. You can do this for other faders and copy and paste the same automation curves if you want. Same goes for any control in ableton, just right click and show automation, it will show up

how would you go about doing this is a automation clip though?
When u create a automation clip, u start off with the value already set, lets say 80%. So the dots on each side are at 80%. So, if u right click one of the dots, a little dropdown menu thing is going to show, then u click "copy value". If u want to paste a value u just do the same, but instead of clicking copy value, u click paste value. :W:
Oh, and it says what value you are pasting, but not copying ;)

cant believe no ones mentioned this yet:

if youre in ableton, stick a Utility Effect on the channel.
use that for any gain automation you need to do and you can still adjust the overall volume in the mix of the track without messing up your automated fades etc.

someone did already say it haha

I use a gain plugin and automate that, that way if the respective volumes of things are altered it doesnt affect it, plus its way tidier imo

I prefer using the Utility plugin to automate volume. Adding automation to your channel fader makes reconfiguring it later down the mix a bit tedious.

I usually don't screw with the mixer at all though, unless I'm doing fade ins, or fade outs.

This is annoying tho if u choose to automate something prior to your final mixdown its a hassle to change your automation every time... if u just adjust the fader it doesn't save it just cancels the automation and u have to click "back to arrangement".

Utility seems to be the choice for doing fades, i usually just do it in clips but it would be nice to see the automation in arrangement mode so ima remember this tip

Im still not sure really sure if I feel its necessary minus intos outros and buildups tho still looking for useful tips.... like things besides all the obvious ones

You don't even have to show it in a new track in ableton you can just expand the relevant track and set the option to display the relevant envelope.

heh i dunno man, its probably the most standard mix technique thats ever existed... and any DAW, even garage band, is capable.. it's almost always really easy to figure out how, in whichever program.

as for why you would, if something sounds too loud or too soft in a part, but perfect in other parts, well then you ought to ride its fader. unless you deem something else appropriate, like filter automation or a gain plugin or something else that will also affect its perceived loudness. But i'd only do that if, while listening, i already decided i wanted something other than fader automation, like an effect that would change the sound in some way, and/or change its volume. If im playing back a mix, and say gee, that's gotta come down when the bass comes in, but that's the only thing i want to change..... automate fader, done.

elsewhere ill use fades and crossfades but that's another story.

well its not really anything earth shattering, i just use it to fade stuff in or out most of the time or if a particular sound is too loud/quiet at certain parts.. I think this is so for most people, though please correct me if i'm wrong. Perhaps i ought to think of it more creatively! anyway, usually i will draw it in instead of recording the automation in real time but that's just me.

I definitely automate faders in my tracks.

I usually start doing them in real time with my nanoKontrol or X-session... and then if I need to fine tune them, I open up the Automation clip and do any manual tweaking from there.

I use it for more than just volume fade ins & outs too... I prefer to do my synth parameter automation in real time as well (obviously one parameter at a time). I also automate my send amounts (again, riding the faders in real time), and even the parameters in the send fx.

Pretty much everything.
