Where's the catch?

The catch is that people who provide design for a living lose out. There's your first catch.

You wouldn't employ a plumber who turned up to your doorstep and just said "I'll do your plumbing for free mate - just tell me what you want done" - you'd presume they didn't have the experience to charge as a professional. Especially if they wrote everything in caps.

Offering design services for free cheapens the industry, so next time I charge my regular prices, someone's going to say - yeah, but I can get Big Bear to do it for free. Great for the client - except, chances are because you're doing it for free, you're not putting in nearly as much work as a proper logo designer should be, so the client loses out too. There's your second catch.

It really bothers me that this sort of thing happens all the time. Sure - offer free logo design as a favour for a friend or for a long-running client - but at the end of the day - for everyone considering getting a "free" logo done - you get what you pay for.

Hi DFRNT,

I think your missing the point, Its for up and coming djs//producers//companies.. who don't have the money to spend on this.. I believe in sharing and giving something back to the community.. That's why I'm doing it.. Yeah sure you could spend £200 and probably get a decent one done, and the people who have the money to do this won't go looking on music forums and blogs.. and as far as quality goes.. from what I can see from your 5 capital letters and a dear.. I'd much rather get one of my free ones than pay "graphic designer" prices for yours.

I believe in Karma and that by helping other people, sooner or later you receive that back.. good breeds good.. opportunities are best shared.. not kept back just for the people who can afford them.. maybe you should try it sometime, you might not be as negative in life.

You can't compare this to a plumber, because if the plumber does a botch job and fucks everything up, you have a problem and need to spend more money on getting someone else to fix it, you can't just leave it. That's why you employ someone you know will do the job, so there's no problems. With a free design if you don't like it, you don't use it, simple as that. Like you said, you get what you pay for, but you don't need to keep it with something like this.

Sometimes designers have to offer services for free to build portfolio and get experience.

either through doing unpaid internships, or offering free services.

i think youre looking too much into this, DFRNT.

it doesnt really cheapen the industry at all, because anyone who is established in their field knows for a top logo they will have to pay.

the thing that REALLY bothers me here, is BigBear is taking other people illustrations and whacking a shitty font over the top.

I'm all for designers building a portfolio, but lets not rip each other off. That shit cheapens the industry.

I may be assuming things here, but that post I linked is from 2006, and his style is consistant. BigBear has "designed" 4 very visually inconsistant logo's on his blog in the time this thread has been posted.

I will happily eat my trousers if you did draw that graphic yourself, but I think you've been rumbled, mate.

Beware of googles new image search engine, beware!

Mate - I've not missed the point at all. I'm well aware of what you're trying to do and I fully appreciate that you want to give back to the community and share your skills with others. Actually I think that's a good thing that you want to contribute, and fair play if this is a completely selfless act - but that's not really what concerns me.

What bothers me is that people getting you to do their logo are getting a poorly researched and put together logo (see above for apparent rip-off) and more importantly - one that has potentially little relevance to their music, their ethos, their target audience and all the other things that get taken in to account when someone gets properly paid to design a logo. £200 won't get you much either, but let's not get in to pricing.

And as far as quality goes - I'm very happy with my "5 capital letters and a dear"

Karma - again, I understand your point of view here - good breeds good - sure, I'm with you - in fact, you might want to ask around before accusing me of not contributing to the community.

True - but why bother to get someone to do a logo for you if you're not going to use it. I'd love to see most people explain to the designer who just took the time out to do them a logo (which is presumably perfect in the designer's eyes) that they're not going to bother using it. You'd be as well saying "sorry, that's terrible". And if the designer doesn't see it as a perfect solution for the logo in the first place (beginner or not), then they shouldn't be letting you use it.

Also - you'd be surprised how much a bad logo/branding can fuck things up - look at Gap for a perfect example. They rolled out their new logo and got a barrage of abuse for it - ended up rolling back and it cost them a fuckload of money. Clearly that's on a different scale, but still - it's the principle, not the size. I think identity has a fair amount to do with how your music or business is percieved regardless of scale.

And presumably you're saying you'd have to employ a plumber who knows what he's doing - but you'd be happy employing a designer for free if they didn't have a clue?

Dont cheapen the industry at all,
Doesn't just benefit producers, also a good way for Big Bear to develop his abilities as well,
Ive messaged him for a logo, havnt seen it yet but am looking forward to see what he's come up with. although im hoping there's no copied images on mine Big Bear ;)

Ps. Yeah I love Echo Dub's logo,
