Obviously its not a direct child of hip hop, if thats what you're getting at.onelove. wrote:Laugh out loud.kidshuffle wrote:Grime is Europe's version of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is as big as Rock and Roll at this point in life....Grime is currently where Hip Hop was in the mid 80's, just starting to blow up worldwide. All those bullshit dudes in the mainstream are the faces of grime for most people outside the UK, and they're not making too dissimilar of tracks.
Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
It's popular in the sense that it's one of those brands indicating you've managed to get off the island somehow ha.firky wrote:Carharrat big across there?

Grime has come and gone. Those in the scene that have gone mainstream don't make grime anymore, and I don't mean that in an elitist purist way, I mean they literally do not MC over 140bpm bass heavy tracks. Both Dizzee Rascal & Tinie Tempah spits/sing over electro or just essentially pop.kidshuffle wrote: Hip Hop is as big as Rock and Roll at this point in life....Grime is currently where Hip Hop was in the mid 80's, just starting to blow up worldwide. It was popular for about half a decade from about 2004, but since then has slumped massively. I can't even remember the last Grime track that charted a respectable position?
So yeah, can't see it blowing up globally any time soon. Most foreigners seem to find the British 'urban' accent abhorrent anyway.

I don't own any Carhartt but I got a couple mates who wear a lot of their t shirts which look all right. Am I missing something?Neptune wrote:what's right with it.wolf89 wrote:What's wrong with Carhartt?

It doesn't matter that it doesn't sound like traditional Grime. They're the biggest stars to come out of the scene, so what ever they do for "x" years will dictate what Grime is in popular culture. I know its not Grime, I've been listening to it since '02. I've also Chipmunk winning a BET award not too long ago, heard Tinie Tempah on my local radio station numerous times and just saw him preform on SNL or Leno's late night gig (think it was the later). The name is bigger than you think..onelove. wrote:

People also thought the southern accent was bad too, but look where thats gone.
Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
Mmm, I actually get what you're saying now. I suppose you're suggesting 'UK Urban' (however cringeworthy the term is) has become mainstream, that I can't really argue with, even though it sounds nothing like Grime. Can definitely see the parallels with Hip-Hop then, as most of the watered down RnB chart shite doesn't qualify as real Hip-Hop either.kidshuffle wrote: It doesn't matter that it doesn't sound like traditional Grime. Still, I'm surprised that Tinie Tempah gets air play over in the US. What about ndubz, have they reached your shores and offended your ear drums yet?

Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
Respect for trying to spread grime in europe!
Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
this is it essentially. "grime" is now the codeword for "uk urban" or whatever stupid name you want to attach to it. personally i couldn't really give a fuck what the old grime crew are doing these days but i doubt even they would insist on calling it grime. nice to see wiley still doing his thing though even if he's made some (mostly quite good) blatant pop tunes.onelove. wrote:I suppose you're suggesting 'UK Urban' (however cringeworthy the term is) has become mainstream, that I can't really argue with, even though it sounds nothing like Grime. i know the whole brostep argument has been done to death, but with the tearout stuff it still has some elements in common, so it's reasonable to still call it dubstep even though it's so far removed. what exactly about that video had anything to do with grime, other than the fact it's a group of blokes with hoods up trying to look hard? obviously it's far more electronic sounding than traditional hip hop but it's still hip hop

This man is right, I love Grime, but the old Grime MC's are no longer making Grime, they've just stopped. Wiley, Skepta, Bashy, Ghetts, Kano, all MC's I love, but it has to be admitted, they simply do not make Grime anymore. The only person who keeps me hoping is P Money..onelove. wrote:Grime has come and gone. This isn't to say there aren't less well known MC's still doing Grime, but the originators and creators have lost it.

Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
He was on Conan O'brien haha. Not sure about SNL or Leno... Conan usually has some decent acts though, quite a few less famous people, not just huge artists which is cool. To most of the people watching it, it was just normal hip hop or rap though. I remember it was a poppy tune anyway with a live band.kidshuffle wrote:heard Tinie Tempah on my local radio station numerous times and just saw him preform on SNL or Leno's late night gig (think it was the later). Oh I see videos of him performing on The View too, wow. (It's like Loose Women)
Pretty weird! Check out the grannies getting down.
On topic: The OP video isn't that bad, the instrumental is cool yeah but that ringtone noise gets annoying. Curious what the lyrics are though.
Re: Icelandic Grime ((GRÆM))
grime... hm.... hey europe, this stuff might be new to you but it's been around the united states for over 30 years now. it's called rap, and/or hip-hop.

Once again, it doesn't matter what you consider real Grime. If the media calls it Grime, thats what its going to be to the masses.khamiz wrote: This man is right, I love Grime, but the old Grime MC's are no longer making Grime, they've just stopped. Would you call Dubstep the same as Drum n Bass? House the same as Techno? Of course you wouldn't, except in this case where the mind numbingly ignorant case of patriotism has blinded your deluded opinion.
