Dr.Dre Headphones

Post by DETUN3R » Thu Jun 30, 2011 6:30 am

Are they really worth the money? I just bought the studio model.

I haven't listened to them myself but they seem to get a real bashing around here.

No they're not worth it. May be an upgrade from skullcandies but $300?!!

I'm sure they sound nice, but I don't know how good they'd be for production, can't imagine them having a particularly flat frequency response. You could definitely get some much nicer cans for the money..

Theres other headphones, too, that are less than half the price of beats but I consider them much better.

indeed, i listened on my mates pair and they have the most ridiculous smiley eq boost added on them. i found it hard to listen to them but for people who don't produce or those who can turn critical listening off in the brains then you'd probably enjoy them.

I was looking into these and here's what i learned about these headphones after going to a few music stores and talking to the employees (not guitar center, stores that actually have employees that know what theyre talking about):

-first of all, you want your producing headphones to be flat and have a wide frequency range. the dre headphones are not.
-the bass is exaggerated.
-they are not wired at all like studio quality headphones. they are wired like standard "high end" headphones for listening to your ipod.
-they are VERY fragile, especially for something that price, way overpriced.

I use the Shure SRH840's, excellent headphones, very flat and wide frequency response, and the cord is replaceable (very important for me), they are like $150 i think.I also use Sony MDR x-500's, which are very bassy, but not exaggerated, and theyre not even active headphones, so they're relatively cheap, like $60. Those together are still much cheaper than the dre's. i have to mix on my headphones a lot, as using monitors is often not an option for me.

I use a Focusrite VRM box (look it up, its one of the best musical investments I've ever made, very useful and cool) for headphone monitoring. its like 100 bucks. that brings you to a little over 350.

if you're looking to buy headphones you could drop lots less on a set of audio-technica and get something shitloads better.

I listened to the Dre iPod speaker dock thing at the apple store once, and the bass was boosted a metric shit ton. I imagine the headphones are probably similar.

bit late no?
Personally, I'd never spend that much on headphones anyway. Anything works as long as you know it well enough :W:

If you want something just for listening that's got bass balls, check out Sony XB500. Their frequency response goes down to 4hz I think. They vibrate sometimes! :7:
