I like this sort of stuff, even if no one will read or connect with what I write. I think it helps me check where I'm at & where I want to go.
My current goals include:
- Continuing to learn more about the tools I have for writing music. I feel like I am accomplishing this in the past several months, just trying to hone & polish little bits of knowledge nearly every day, and I hear & see it when I work on music. I was definitely one of those kids that bought a few pieces of gear & software because producers X, Y & Z had those pieces, and then felt very disappointed when my first, second, fiftieth, etc. attempts did not sound like those producers. Got rid of the gear, went with a piece of software and got comfortable with it, and now I think I understand the software much better and I am slowly picking up new gear (hi E-MU e6400 Ultra!) and software, and learning how to use it.
- Improve my workflow in the studio. I am one of the older forum members, age-wise, and I have my time split up between full-time work (mortgage! car payment! savings! college loans!), part-time grad school (thankfully I know work at a university and get free tuition as a perk here), a long-term relationship (she's not in to music like I am, but if the past 2.5 years are any indication, she'll remain supportive of anything I do with music), hanging out with friends & family, DJ'ing a little bit (usually one or two local gigs a month, and I am really picky about when & where I'll play now); so yeah, my time is tight. Anyways, to improve workflow, I do tedious studio stuff when I'm not inspired to write, and since focusing on this over the past several months, I think my studio time is working out how I want.
- Get a solo release on vinyl and/or CD. I've got a handful of things on the digital sites via a local label, and a couple of old collaborations on vinyl & CD (ft. Ransom... long story, but I stopped writing for about five years after those), but I want my own releases some day. And if it's a collaboration, I want it to be a true production partnership. So yeah, maybe work with some friends in the future.
- Ironically, write more drum'n'bass. That's what got me interested in production initially, and now I'm starting to play with 170 BPM again. Got a couple techy rollers in sketching stage, and having a lot of fun with them. I still want to write other music too.

Goals change, I have recently started with writing about music, instead of making it.. but still knowledge is an essential in both, so a good mix imo.

Another goal I want to achieve is to be able to be that producer with variety, being able to make a variety of genres: Dubstep/Jungle/DnB/Garage and then exploring the different styles within these genres so I become a better producer.

What a wonderfully insightful thread. A great and somewhat motivating read from all y'all.
My single number one aim, as it has been from day one, is write something unique, some shit that I haven't heard before, something that tells a story to me (and perhaps others) that means something important.
Standardly, I'd love to tour with my band and get releases on respected labels and have my own push it's artists further in their career.
But I'll settle for that one stand out album, the one that says something worth listening to. Like GZA, Tracy Chapman, Squarepusher, Hybrid and RJD2. Something that changes your perspective on life.
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Well as far as dubsteps concerned I feel I've moved on. Rarely even stop by these forums these days. I make mostly garage now but even that's starting to feel stale. Probably heading towards more vocal focussed tracks at some point.
As far as being a musician in general I wanna get into writing background music for other forms of media; games, films, tv, adverts I don't care which. I like writing to a brief and enjoy making odd types of music so hopefully that dream will come true :\ who knows though.

I want to be in the Beatport top 10. Had a #11 so I've been close, but no cigar!
Release a dubstep tune (I normally sing on trance).
I need to be able to manage my time better. Juggling studying law, making vocals and also working, so time is a commodity!

finishing a proper setup i can work with, including
- greatly reduced number of plugins i use
- proper midi templates for my controllers so i can immediately start working without having to re-assign stuff every second day (see first point)
- finally get monitors and a bit of outboard gear
from then on i just wanna make tunes, maybe send them to a label one day but not until im happy with them and have enough finished stuff on my hd to last me through a phase of writers block

i was trying to think of what my goals are, and it's obvious that i've reached all of them as far as music is concerned.
as i continue on with my life, i will continue to make songs that i find uplifting. but i must look beyond art in order to write the next chapters of my life.. there are still things i need to explore.

I never really did much dubstep... In fact, I've never fit much in any one particular scene, so writing music outside of a particular comfort zone doesn't really apply, although I do keep pushing myself to experiment and expand as much as I possibly can.
I guess the more pressing goals I have are what I want to do with music in general. Yeah, I love playing in clubs - but I can't do it forever. Recently, I've been pushing my music as dance music in a whole different way. I've been working with some choreographers and dance companies, and man... if you thought it was a buzz to be on stage & have a club go nuts to your beats, try having a stage full of dancers telling a story to your sounds (I was also playing live cello on stage with them at the time) and then having a whole theatre go wild. It is a whole new level of rush.
I've also spent a lot of time devoted to my cello students - because while I love making music for today, I also loving helping shape the musicians of tomorrow.
Electronically I've been working on a lot - mainly collaborations. I always make music for myself first... but I really enjoy working with other people as well.

The bit about the stage show and choreography sounds really, really fun...
Did you give your 2c on the dance routines too, or just chip in musically?
