Interface problem

Post by Basstone » Thu Jun 30, 2011 6:22 pm

I recently brought the Yamaha Hs80's and an alesis io2 express interface with that. I've got everything set, and i read the manual to see how to connect this up to my mac and all it said is that you make the alsesis your default input driver from the audio midi set up. I tried that but it didn't work, the output was still coming from mac, so i also made the interface the output as well as the input. I also had to make the interface the input and output from the audio setting in system preferences. This has worked, i have audio coming out from the montiors from things likes itunes and Reason as well. However, on the alesis interface itself, there is no input at all... the db meter is not moving up and down. Is this normal? Should the meter not being running up and down from the output of my laptop. Also i can no longer control my volume using the up and down volume control button my mac, there just a cross when the volume comes up.

What's all this about..? Surely the DB meter on my interface should be going up and down from the output of my mac? Or is that only when i put in an instrument ? :? I have messed around with the inputs and outputs

Thanks

From reading this I can safely imagine that the DB Meter on the interface is for the inputs not the output.

What goes to your monitors would be regarded as the output, even though it is coming from your Mac, if it isn't routed into your Mic/Inst input lines then its likely the meter is only for those.

As for the volume control on the mac not allowing you to use the buttons, that is because you are now using and 3rd party audio interface to control the volume. However their are some interfaces that do allow you to still use those buttons/module on the mac, such as the highly recommended Apogee Duet!

hope that helps

Thanks man, that helped clear up why there was no movement from the meter. I did look at the Apogee Duet before purchasing this one, but i think spending around £300 for the Apogee Duet or £450 ish for the Apogee Duet 2 is pointless for me, as i am merely using interface as a soundcard to hook up my monitors. I never intent to record anything, other that a odd dj mix here and there. Whilst on this, do you know how i would go about recording a dj mix, what about be the input and outputs?

Many thanks.

I will check the specs of your unit to really see how you can go about this when I have time,
in the meanwhile I do want to point out that the audio interface is doing more than simply improving audio quality for recordings,
Another thing you may have overlooked is that the quality of the audio interface determines the quality of the output to your monitors,
I went from the M-Audio Firewire Solo to the Apogee Duet (then the Duet2) and it was mindblowing the amount of difference my ears got accustomed to just by listening back to tracks, I switched during mid production of a track and was instantly able to mixdown with much more clarity and ease, and was even able to hear really annoying signal eating hums in my synths I couldn't hear before.
