Snare mixing problems

I've been trying to improve my mixing by creating a short passage and just mix it as good as possible. This is my first try:

I think I might have the chance to go buy some RP5s so I might do that in the coming days. I mixed everything leaving 6 dB of headroom, as if I was going to get it mastered. I'm going to try to do that from now on for common practice.

A question i have is how do I get my snare to come out? It sounds buried under everything and I can't get it to fit.

make it louder?, EQ it, and eveything else so that it has its own space so that nothing is covering it up? layer it with other samples to provide punch and presence in several different frequency bands rather than the area it takes up at the moment so that it has more chance of standing out in the mix?

Well I was told that most people keep their snare and kick at the same levels. I have both the kick and snare at -12 dB. So idk.

Also how is the whole mix overall? Is it just me or should I raise the low cut on the reverb off some stuff?

i dont really stick to numbers, if the snare isnt sounding good enough and doesnt pop out enough, then i make it louder, probably make everything quieter and then move it up. it doesnt have to be the same level, i dunno who said that, why would you want it to be. i mean the kick could be louder aswell too really.

it could use some high end stuff from hats maybe, and i dunno i low cut everything thats not bass anyway so my reverb shouldnt really have any low freq content anyway.

I just figured out how to use a Compressor. Seriously. I'm not joking.

I just updated the track in the OP, the kick is louder, I layered to make a better snare, I compressed them both. Oh my God this is amazing.

i did a dsf google search too and found a lot of hits for your problem too O___________o;;;

anyway tape saturation & compression sometimes make my snares pop out more
the sample youre using might not be that great too

Turn everything down besides the snare.

find the 'sweet spot' range of frequencies in the snare that sound the best and eq that out of everything else. sidechain that eq with the snare so that when (and only when) the snare hits, everything else gets out of the way of the snare...resulting in a clearer snare.

Are you saying put all your wobbles etc on a bus and at the end of the signal chain, a notch eq eqing out where the snares sweet spot is , so when that snare hits, it cuts out the wobble so the snare can breathe? Kind or like that thread you started a while back about that eq subtract thing plugin that guy made?

yeah yeah. except that guys plugin would work a whole lot better.

yeah. you could also try using an envelope controller.

This is pretty crazy, like I can actually tell that my mixing is getting good. Usually when I turn my stuff all the way up it hurts my ears and I blink every time the snare hits due to bad mixing and loudness, but this is all smooth and stuff. Thank you DSF. You can close this thread now, I don't really care.

your welcome! I should try this sometime. I do it with my kicks, never done it with my snares. In fact, Imma do it with all my drums from now on.
