Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
lol at the promo video for it, it looks like a mgs cut scene. Am interested in having a bash on one of these things though.

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
Yeah. From the reviews it seems they spent too much on that cool video and not enough on OS development, which has been plagued by difficulties from the get-go. The other dealbreaker is the price - ouch!
I used to have a QY-10 back in the day and that thing was just the best for using as a portable music sketchpad. There's practically nothing out there any more in this niche (portable hardware with sequencing & synthesis at a minimum) - everybody just got laptops. But I don't want another laptop...

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
Elektron kit definitely ain't cheap but it is quality, I have their synth (Monomachine) and it is amazing. If I could find someone selling a Machinedrum at a reasonable price, I'd probably buy that as well.
edit: wtf is up with this promo video? ha ha

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
It is the best thing ever .... even better than my beloved machinedrum ( yes !! Elektron fanboy )!! But not fully developped yet !! still needs some features ( will be updated on regular basis )
Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
used it last night as a filter on some neuro bass --- killah filter .. and the reverb. delay and distortion sound sooooo good .. also the slicing feature and auditioning of samples betters the workflow! It has top notch crossfader and u can upgrade the memory card - sync is a problem @ the moment..its only able to send clock - not recieve. Also the "normal" retrigger is still missing.
Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
aslso... slice in static machines, more fx, loop machine + full midi implementation and a midi sequencer will be added but they decided to release it as kind of a "beta" version!
Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
So basically... they released it too soon? I think I would wanna wait until that stuff got ironed out before forking over that much cash. Wonder why they were in such a hurry to get it out there with these bugs.
Yuroq, any chance you can post up some examples of those sounds ya made?

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
I have one, absolutely love it, but it is still in a beta OS. they just put out an update today that addresses receiving transport commands, but not midi clock yet. It also added the retrig stuff that the MachineDrum UW was famous for. Even tho its still in beta, its powerful enough at the present that you can do full tracks on it, no problem. I'm in my last semester of grad school, so I haven't had enough time to get really quick with the workflow yet, but even just scratching the surface, its really quick and intuitive
Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
So new & improved OS 1.0 is out, supposedly fixing most of the major known bugs...
Octatrack owners: is it worth $1400 USD?

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
It depends on your definition of worth it. Technically it doesn't do anything that's impossible to do with a computer and DAW setup. In fact it does some things a lot worse than that set up, but I do know that since Ive had the octa, I've been making tons of great music. It's a very very inspiring instrument. I'm able to create what I want to create with ease, and it comes out sounding very unique. There are so many happy accidents that happen with it that for me, the combination of the workflow and Interface possibilities make it worth it. That doesn't even take into account the live performance capabilities which for me far surpass anything I've been able to do with abelton. If I could only take one piece of gear with me to a desert island, it would be the octatrack over a computer

Badass video for an instrument and about 56 seconds in, I have to admit I had a chuckle at that.

Re: Octatrack (Elektron)
Interesting - thanks for taking the time to summarize that. There's a few portable sequencer/sampler "toys" coming out lately, more in the last year than the entire past decade before. I'm especially interested in the live performance capability... Knobgoblin, I see you're in the Bay Area too. If you play any shows let me know and I'll come out and check it out.knobgoblin wrote:It depends on your definition of worth it.
