Would this Collab idea work?

Post by oneliam » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:07 pm

So I was thinking the other day that if I wrote a track solely with MIDI (no samples etc.) and then mastered it and mixed it down as a final product and kept that. But then exported the song as a MIDI export aswell (all instruments named accordingly: drums, piano, lead, bass, pad etc etc.) and uploaded it to this topic, then somebody can download it, import the MIDI file and create sounds in their sequencer accordingly to what the instruments are named (having never heard my version of the song) and finish a track with the MIDI arrangement but not editing the strucutre or any of the MIDI files in anyway. Just creating the sounds what they think would go to say lead 2 or whatever one of the instruments may be called.

And once they've done that we both upload the finished products and compare the two; people can listen, see how two different stimulus with the same initial MIDI file can create two (most likely) different tracks. Does this sound like it could work at all? Is it a good idea? And does anyone wanna give it a try?

Thanks,

Liam

Would be interesting. Can we add samples? Effects? Do we have full creative control over everything so long as we don't change the MIDI or structure?

Wouldn't mind giving this a go.

Yeah course any manipulation to your own sounds you create, as long as they follow the MIDI transcribed. I dunno about samples. I think if it is allowed, it could stray away too much from the creative idea of "these two different tracks are from one MIDI track" kinda thing, if that makes any sense? But could give it a go? If people are up for it I'll write a track for then end of the week
