I'd think it is quite shocking, news enough that they listen in on celebrity messages but takes a special type of scumbag to listen in on murdered kids messages and delete them to make room for more! and now seems they've been listening in on 7/7 bombing victims messages. reckon this could be the end of the news of the world- at least a big rebranding on the way

Wake up.

This type of stuff has been going on since the 50s...

Anyone who has bought The Sun, News of the World or any rag regularly in the last decade is guilty in this.

I'm sure journalists are hacking phones all the time, deleting messages off murdered girls phones to make room for more is next level shittyness though- not really shocked that it happened, but it is shocking behavior (as in very bad), and I think most of the public can be reasonably okay with tapping celebrities or MP phones for a story, no-one will just be fine with this new stuff though- sales and advertising for news of the world will go down.

Which is why, like I said in my first post, i'm not easily shocked. But THIS is some next level foulness.

I don't think anyone was/is surprised about the celebrity hacking, but this really crossed a line. They've actually tampered with and removed evidence from an ongoing missing person enquiry... not only did they cause the family distress by allowing them believe their daughter was still alive, they showed no respect for the legal system in the slightest.

They're just fucking jackals. Some people need to serve some time to make an example of this... journalism is too safe a job, they cross the line all the time for the hell of it because they know at worst they'll only have to print a retraction or apology.

Tampering and getting in the way of police inquiries/evidence to break stories has been happening since the 50s. How many killers have not been caught because of this? How many rapists have got off? How many juries have been prejudiced? Look at any high profile case.

If you bought a NoW with a story about Milly on the front around this time you are guilty in this. You can't turn around and moan about how it was done. It's simple economics. Demand fuels the supply. People need to take responsibility for their actions.

Not specifically tryna gun u homie, but what planet you living on!?

Read a little deeper into the work culture that drove reporters to seek out and/or break these stories. yeh maybe management level is little safer in this (Brooks) but you cld say that about any industry.

I have never bought the notw in my life, so is it alright if I moan about it? Safe!
(Super nice view from this moral high ground)

I don't mean safe in the sense that they're not all going to get made redundant over the next decade... I mean safe in the sense that they were pretty much acting as outlaws for decades and the police didn't bat an eyelid.

It actually looks like the police knew about a lot of this and still turned a blind eye until they were forced not to by public pressure. If that's not "too safe", I don't know what is!?

A few hacks (no pun) going to pen for abusing their position could be the shot in the arm certain parts of the industry need. But yeah, it's the editor-level that really needs making an example of. They create the culture in the business and set the directions for the publications afterall.

Oh, and I've never knowingly even read a copy of the NOTW, let alone bought one. The only redtops I've ever read have been ones that are lying around in cafes. I'm pretty sure I'm ok to throw bricks at them... my glasshouse is full of windows. ;-)

^^ Yeh Id agree with that.

But bangin up the hacks is like imprisioning factory workers in a factory polluting the ocean.

and if you didn't?

Just because it's "been going on for ever" doesn't make it any better. Should we just say "oh it's ok" and not try and use this to highlight the need for greater press accountability? Or should we just say "oh well I've bought a newspaper before so I can't criticise them for this foulness"

It's also pretty easy to say "oh loads of newpapers have got in the way of police investigations before" but unless you can provide something concrete about that then it isn't much of an argument.
