Why use synths?
evenin folks..ive noticed theres alot of threads on 'how to make this bass' here....why?
i personaly dont use synths, after bein avid massive user for about a year, i made some cool noises but nothin compared to my way of workin right now.
synths take up alot of cpu space (which is annoyin as fuck) where as samplers dont, and with the right preparation/automation/vsts you can get somethin completly unique and unheard
guess im tryna say is, try mangling a random sample rather than using a synth, im gettin sick of hearin tunes where i can pick out which ocs were used an so on

Re: Why use synths?
i like pushing random samples through sine shapers, comb filter, and other effects in different orders and ending up with gnarly bass and synthy sounds.
but there's nothing like a good old square.
why use synths, why sample.... funny thread titles. Cuz they're what we've got! both are great.

I know Bombaman uses mostly samples and his tunes are top notch
I do however mostly use my hardware synth for my sounds.
learning to make the sounds and then re-sampling them into Kontakt or whatever sampler is truly the way to go
Re: Why use synths?
yea comb filters are mint.....ive not used a hardware synth in production before, any good?
i use a simpler (ableton) to do all my shit

Re: Why use synths?
You have more control over your sound by using a synth.
Also, most modern DAW's have freeze and bounce functions to free up your CPU.

Re: Why use synths?
well if u know wot yur doin that isnt strickly true
Re: Why use synths?
u have more control over a sound by sampling it... into a wavetable synth ;]

Re: Why use synths?
This is kind of ridiculous to see on an electronic music forum. There will always different ways to make music, but why use synths?? its like why sing when you can change someone elses lyrics. Its original, additive synthesis to make something from NOTHING. Instead of taking others work(that they probably synthesized) and calling it your own after using an array of effects.
Not saying there's a damn thing wrong with sampling, I think it can be used in very creative ways, but synths are to electronic music as what guitars are to rock n roll.

Skill has nothing to do with it.Metabolic wrote:well if u know wot yur doin that isnt strickly true
Let's say I have a basic synth patch with 2 saw waves, one of which is raised 3 semitones, and an LFO on a filter.
You have a sample of this sound.
Can you change that second saw wave to a sine?
Can you make it raised 5 semitones instead of 3?
Can you change the LFO amount?
Can you play it a few octaves up without any artifacts?
Nope.
Whatever you can do with a sample, I can bounce my synth to an audio track and do.
Re: Why use synths?
amon tobin uses only samples. jussayin'

Chill dude, he never said that...Metabolic wrote:u reckon...u think you could recreate the shit i make?Whatever you can do with a sample, I can bounce my synth to an audio track and do.
But he's right...
You should of countered with, "but you ain't got access, to hundreds of years of recording with your synth" Which he has got no real come back to.
Anyway I am mostly a synth/mic guy.

Re: Why use synths?
sorry that wasnt supposed to sound mean.....guys just seemd abit full of himself
Re: Why use synths?
I'm not comparing skill here, Metabolic. I'm debating the benefits of synthesis vs. using samples. To further clarify, when I say "you", I don't mean you specifically. I mean anyone using a sampler.
I'm not against sampling by any means, I do it all the time.

Re: Why use synths?
why use synths is like asking someone why use paint to paint something. everyone in electronic music production uses synths sure you can sample but there is going to be a point where you have to start synthesizing your sounds.Metabolic wrote:evenin folks..ive noticed theres alot of threads on 'how to make this bass' here....why?

Re: Why use synths?
is easiest best? in music that is...not takin a shit.....
im not against synths...im sayin try somethin new...the past few weeks ive been workin more and more with sampling (over synths) and iv had more fun and created amazing things, to me, than i ever have in a synth
