No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo

reasonably interesting programme, although most of the rappers interviewed say very similar things.

Haven't watched it yet, but thought of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsM4bI63iaQ
Sounds interesting, though. Hip hop (and football) seems to still be ridiculously homophobic...

Re: No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo
yeah they interview the ppl from that record label.
having listened to the programme in some ways the bigger problem than the homophobia is the condescending attitude of those who consider themselves non homophobic. pretty much yeah it's fine just don't talk about it lol.

definitely. slick rick and mf doom have found it impossible to make a name for themselves whilst dizzee rascal was never able to get ugk to feature on his album, or el-p to release it.pkay wrote:i think hip hops last taboo is being a british rapper

Re: No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo
The "no homo" thing always reminded me of the "batty bwoy" bash tunes that were so common in dancehall. Made it hard to enjoy the music when they openly sing about hating or even killing gay people. Some top dancehall people came together and tried to stamp out those type of songs but it's still around. I don't want to start a religious debate, but it's obviously pretty much the only source left of anti-gay beliefs in our society.
Re: No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo
Edited out that part about English rappers in the charts haha, I was about to remind you how huge Tinie Tempah is in the states now.pkay wrote:i think hip hops last taboo is being a british rapper

Re: No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo
You've listed 3 artists over the course of 30+ years. And I'm sure UGK got paid or got pointssoul dead wrote:definitely. slick rick and mf doom have found it impossible to make a name for themselves whilst dizzee rascal was never able to get ugk to feature on his album, or el-p to release it.pkay wrote:i think hip hops last taboo is being a british rapper
Don't mean to get you to flag waving but I think it's a bigger issue in hip hop that the majority of hip hop isn't open to outsiders. Hard enough for a white american to break in let alone a more white dominated scene and what americans view as a 'softer' scene in general. Same with Chineese, Japanese, Canadians, etc.
Re: No Homo: Hip Hop's Last Taboo
out of the vast number of british rappers I've listened to (how many have you actually heard pkay?) I can say without a doubt that there are many more interesting and relevant than the dancing mouthpieces american labels peddle to women and children.
that is, however, not the point of this thread.

actually edited it out to avoid the argument about america isn't the only place hip hop exists despite our dominance in consumption and production.
you live in austin too... only tune i've ever heard out and about from Tinie Tempah is the one with wiz khalifah and thats only there because of wiz
even so its not like dallas or houston is playing him... only reason hes getting play in austin is because the city is pasty and the college girls love that hip-pop shit

you need to ease down the anti-uk talk in every thread...starting to sound a bit racist- it won't help you deal with your inadequacies any better trying to put down other groups of people. hatered breeds hatred, try for some positive attention!

Yeah I dunno about radio play honestly, I haven't heard US radio in a long time besides a couple of university stations and they'd be more likely to play him too. Honestly never heard Wiz myself either.
