How Drug Culture Has Influenced Dubstep

Post by Akira » Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:16 pm

Ill keep this short and sweet, back in the day the majority of the crowd, (at least to the nights I was going to) were smoking weed and just sippin Red Stripe, then came Ketamine and later Mkat. This meant that the crowd wanted a more aggressive jump up type music to listen to, Rather than the ganja smokin heads down crew.

I wish it was how it was back in the day, when you could spark up a bosshead at west indian in room 2 and jus chill to mala b2b skream.

Its true man!!

I seen it happen at subdub/exodus used to be abit of a deeper vibe people were still on pills but not on racous shit, but then cos the crowds mindset changed (not mine im happy with the green gold) the vibe changed and people wanted to jump up and down like gheys and it wont even about skankin no more...hopefully outlook this year will deliver!!!

i think it's got more to do with the fact that the kids that listened to steve aoki, bloody beetroots, justice etc got into "dubstep". Plenty of "deep heads" do drugs, plenty of bros don't (not counting alcohol here, obviously). I don't think there is that big of an overlap between the "heads down crew" and brosteppers.

Seems more logical to me that the aggressive dubstep came first and the drugs followed. It's just hard to imagine a bunch of people taking a ton of uppers like "LETS GO TO THAT CLUB THAT PLAYS THAT REALLY DEEP, VIBEY DUBSTEP SHIT!"

I listened to Japan by Plastician on acid once and I literally felt like I was swimming in the song.

lol. In nz the brostep culture is synonimus with shitty chalk-based drugs (methadrone or wtf is coming from those chinese labs)... and im sure Shum would agree with me on this!

Iv been goin to subdub for a long time and even though there was people smoking and chilling in the corner there has always been the mad heads down the front in room 2, think its more to do with the jump up dnb than the drugs to be honest fella and if it is the drugs it certainly aint a new thing. Remember that room 2 at the windy was known for dnb and jungle a long time before dubstep got represented there so im not sure what 'back in the day your on about' plus witht he exception of the few transmissions that happend its never been exclusivly dubstep in the back room, always seen the main hall as the chiller myself and the back room as the aggy one

Going to a rave baked out of your face is so much fun, went to Shit The Bed vs Digital Soundboy in Bristol in June and it was fucking sick, smoking all day then smoking some more there then listening and skanking out to some sub-heavy dubstep is just pure bliss. :D :corndance:

I believe that Dub and Dubstep where highly influenced by weed.

Definetly Man, I think the reason i started to like dubstep so much in 05/06 was cos it was about the time i started smoking, puts you in a deeper, more philosophical mindset that brostep just isnt suited too.
