okay my opinion:

to build an intro, you have to create atmosphere. it's gotta pull the listener in to your music. ive seen some people do this by creating ambiance with pads and synths or delayed vocal samples. ive seen others just flat out use a field recording of a street with pads and synths over it.

when i think of a good intro that has percussion, i usually see the percussion being not as heavy hitting as the main beat. this could make your drop hit a lot harder.

lemme kno if that helped at all :U

Create some great atmosphere with pads and whatnot! I always seem to struggle with the intro myself, imo intros are a pain, but keep at it!

Remember, the intro to a dubstep (brostep) song will be the main hook that draws people in. It is THE most important part of a dubstep (brostep) song, because the drop takes the intensity of the intro and just SLAMS it at you all at once.

Just do something catchy

For me, building the intro is the hardest part of the song!

I always start with right after the drop and try to build the intro afterwards.

Lately, what works best is to build a melody and add a pad underneath of it with a stripped down version of the drums. Follow this up with some risers , buildups and drumrolls and voila you have an intro.

Building the nice catchy melody is the tricky part for me

you don't make an intro you become an intro and write yourself in the form of music :P

I can NEVER construct an intro :(

Post by imlouiedawg » Tue Jul 12, 2011 4:30 am

Hey guys, I know I may have mentioned this before, but I still struggle creating an intro with every track. I have such a hard time choosing a synth, drums are usually okay for me, but even if i do get the intro down, its still hard for me to go into a breakdown without loosing rhythm. I see lots of posts saying use this and that, but I cant find any tips on how to make the devices with the tools I have because nobody really clarifies what I should :( If anyone could share with me the basics of intro structure that would be great. Please be descriptive in your responses! If anyone could please steer me in the right direction? I'm using Reason 5 and I have started to study the basics of synthesis. I know this whole topic is very needy, but I'm a fresh young producer trying to learn! :D

Thanks.

Much Love

- Louie

i Dont think there is necessarily a structure but what ve been finding lately is if you struggle with meoldies use and arpeggiator to get some decent results. i usually play a highish pitched synth with a bit of reverb and delay n whatever other effects you want. then i layer a sweeper in the background or just add some recorded ambient noise with alot of reverb and delay etc on it. probably not the best way to go about it but i et decentish reults sometimes. i also like to put a low pass filter on the melody and bringing it in by automating the cutoff to rise over the length of the intro.

It's probably because you use Massive, you should stop that.

intro is sometimes the last thing I'll do. often with dance music (as a whole) the intro is pretty superfluous to everyone except the DJ so bear that in mind.

in dubstep intro's tend to be very short and simple, so you would be wise not to cram too much into one. maybe some percussion, or drums and some atmospherics or hinting toward your melody.(if you have one) its really about setting up a sense of anticipation innit.

epic intro's are fine, but they're easily made too long and can be very yawnsome indeed. Short and sweet is always better than long and noodly.

use fills and other transitional FX (sweeps up or sweeps down) and impact FX (reverb kick boom type stuff) to generate drama or to lend continuity.

Chad let's not get big headed because you use another synth now. Massive is a good synth mate, that is why it is so popular. You've started talking about Massive like it fucked your girlfriend and buttraped your mother. Every thread, and your sig? :u:

I've never seriously used Massive. I've tried it out of curiosity because it was talked about so much, and I dropped it after a week. I don't know how anyone can make sounds out of it, it's terrible. It offers you waveforms that don't teach you anything, and it's just really iffy. Now, if you're like Datsik or someone who knows what they're doing, and then make your signature sound from Massive, it's fine, but if you're a kid that has only ever touched Massive and not even a sampler, then wtf.

I don't really hate Massive, I just hate posts that are like, "Yeah I want to make a sine in Massive and i dont know how.", and, "I need a good kick, how do I make one in Massive?".

Like are you serious?

Massive sucks anus imho but I've never seriously used it either. It seems to me like it has a bunch of pre-made sounds that you just put together. And the worst part imo is that you can't see the waveforms so you are blinded as to how your sound actually works.
...in my opinion

out of curiosity then, what are you using? massive is an extremely versatile synth... my go to synth for creating any sort of lead or bass. ive even used in for pads.

To the OP, i like to think of it as writing an essay. with an essay, you have to have a hook to get the reader interested immediately, and then you have to lay down the basis of the topic to lead into the next paragraph. same concept really. I like to add something every bar or so, or every 2 bars, something like that, to keep it interesting until the song really starts. just think, "what could i add here to keep the listener interested?" listen to other songs for inspiration, and not just dubstep. all kinds of music. just dont listen to pink floyd if you're trying to write a brief and to-the-point intro. Also try making the main part of the song first, and then strip that part down to its bare essentials, maybe just the main melody, then add drums, etc., until it sounds almost complete... and then let it drop.
