Mentors

Post by Toxic_Acidity » Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:17 am

Ok recently I've been thinking that there are a huge amount of people making music here from all over the world. Various parts of the UK, Europe, US and we are all inspired by various artists. I'm not sure about other countries but each city in the UK seems to have some kind of different vibe going on. Here in Manchester we have a long culture of rock, Happy Mondays, Oasis but we also had the Hacienda which helped spawn acid house. Bristol is much more mellow, with trip-hop and London has all the urban stuff going on. Big generalisation I know :).

So I was thinking what if your from like Ireland for example and want to know how people in London are making dubstep, I don't mean basic stuff like lfos and massive, I mean what people are aiming for and what they and there mates are inspired by.

It kind of feels like when I used to surf, I used to hang at the beach almost everyday and pretty much knew everyone. We could spot non locals a mile off cause they were always dressed in brand new over expensive gear  with no clue what they were doing and getting in peoples way. We also used to watch locals and pick up there techniques and try work towards that and compete with each other. I think this is pretty much how music culture is too, If your online in your bedroom all you can do is compare it to guys you hear online.

Well I was thinking what if people could offer to mentor people and chat about what inspires them, how they do there techniques, maybe even post a reply on the current scene in there area, any underground guys that are appearing which are pushing the movement. Maybe its not even possible to do this online and the only way is to move to where ever and go to all the nights.

i sometimes feel like i'm missing out as i live in devon. seems like a lot of good artists come from cities. but i'd have thought this was more of a non issue these days due to the internet. i dunno.

i tend to use artists i like as my mentors, i.e if i like their tunes i try to make my own stuff with that style as an influence.
