Should the USA Raise the Debt Ceiling?

Post by bigfootspartan » Tue Jul 12, 2011 1:28 am

Sorry if this is a repost, but I couldn't see this anywhere here.

This story is crazy up here in Canada, CBC is coving it daily. I don't know about the States though, I don't watch much states news but every time I flick through it's just people whining about that Casey Anthony lady or whatever.

Personally I'm not sure what they should do. If they borrow more to stimulate the economy more I doubt it'll do much other than delay their defaults. but if they don't borrow it'll basically mean they are guaranteed going to default on their loans.

This has happened before and proven uneventful in the long run.

The problem is this is another bandaid for a gunshot wound.

Obama seemed close to having a longterm plan but it wouldve required a gradual raise in taxes so the republicans backed out.

The republicans are of the mindset "we dont need more taxes we need more tax payers" which ideally is true but that's pretty far in the future. In the interim we need to raise taxes, plain and simple.

US has no choice, the money's already been spent.

the republicans raised the debt ceiling 7 times for george dubya, and they're acting like this time it's the worst thing in the world.

yeah true, and actually i like the republicans idea of cutting the deficit, but i know it's gonna be cut in very stupid places.

i was just trying to illustrate that their stubborn jackass routine has come too little, too late.

According to the Economist its mostly the Republicans being stubborn arseholes about raising it over how it's going to be reduced after, especially that no taxes should be raised (even Reagan raised taxes when it was needed) and even closing loopholes is a no-go

Why do you guys bother discussing this? Its like if I made a thread discussing what kind of alloy the frame of the next mars rover should be made out of. None of us here have any clue, and none of us here know enough to make anything close to an informed decision.

Actually, they do. People like yourself with no understanding of government thinking they don't is part of the reason we're in this hole. I realize its fun to be an angry cynical person and snipe at our leaders, but come the fuck on.

Lol I'm a pretty positive guy when I'm not heckling people on the snh, I just don't understand why people without any education think they're so much smarter than people in charge.

You're right. I'm sure all those high level economists with 20 years of field experience could use your help.

If Congress were listening to those high level economists, they wouldn't be voting on party lines.

Why do I bother arguing with you? You want to be cynical and all hip and anti-government, so you're going to be. You and I both know its not like you'll ever read some literature on the subject that isn't from a blog, so just keep on hating shit you don't know the first thing about.

The problem isn't cynical hipsters, its the a kowtowing yes-men that think technocracy is as good as democracy. Even Benjamin Franklin knew that.

I'm not saying that, but to think that the peanut gallery here (and no offense to anyone in particular) can make an informed decision on such a matter when there are millions of numbers we don't know about is kind of silly. The problem is people here don't just throw shit back and forth, they root themselves into a certain argument and stick by it when challenged, even though their opinion was mostly based on speculation and feelings. Shit, I've done that myself many times lol. Not trying to sound preachy, I just think certain shit can't really be debated from afar.
