No, you're pretty much bang on... though the crusades were only really about religion on the surface. It was empire building under any-other-name - it just handily happened that almost all the territory 'we' wanted was beyond Southern Europe and so in the hands of Muslims... and at the time, the best way to encourage the Knightly class to go slaughtering-and-raping was to tell them the enemy was heathen and they'd get into heaven if they killed them all without looking afraid.... the perfect storm for a couple of really good goes at genocide.

Of course there probably are some people in power who would love for this to happen, but they need us to go along with it. People have to give in, or at the very least stand idle in their zombie consumer life as it happens around them. Look into what some of the Bilderberg group officials have mentioned, discussing "world communities" at their meetings. Whatever that means. I would assume more things like world banks, world currencies, world police, etc. But they don't go into much detail, so naturally a lot of people assume the worst because they are so secretive. They could be discussing world peace for all we know, it just depends on how cynical you want to be about it all.
