Free permanent hosting for forum dubs...

Post by simian » Wed May 09, 2007 5:07 pm

Over the last few days I've been trying to collect together all the forum dubs I could find for a mix (and there's a lot of seriously heavy shit on here :) ), and it just started to get to me how shit some of these free upload places are. You've got to put up with all the ads, and most of the time the links don't work for very long...

So, anyway, I've got a decent server colocated in london and a good chunk of unused bandwidth that I'm very happy to share with all you kind producers out there :). If anyone wants to host some dubs with me, just prod me in a pm and I'll stick it online. If enough people want to use this then i wouldn't mind putting in the couple of hours needed for people to have a username/password to upload/delete tracks from the server.

I do *not* want to replace the forums in any way and this would not be for leaving comments or anything. Dubs would still have to be linked to from posts here, it's just to stop people from having to re-up when shitting sendspace spaks out.

Much love to all the producers on the forums :)

By the way, if anyone can think of a decent name for a dubz server, I'll register a domain for this and move the files to that.

dubz.org.uk isn't taken, but there has to be something better?

that's really awesome
this is what i love this forum for :D:

btw another good place to host your dubs is fileden.com
thats where i store my stuff atm.
of course there's a bandwidth limit, but you get plenty of space and direct linking is possible, no "blah blah wait 10 hours and visit our sponsors"

Email me any tracks you want put up, and i'll PM/email you the links to them.

PM me if you're interested and i'll give you my email address.

Someone asked me in an email if it would be possible to keep the links private for only giving to certain people. The answer is yes, you can do with the links as you please. I'm just hosting the stuff, you can give the links to whoever you want. I'll even password them if you want, and make it so that your directory on the server isn't listable.

Since our little social gathering here in Boston has been catering to dubstep in addition to UKG and the assorted variants, I had planned on offering space as well, but since the offer is already posted it makes sense to have 1 central location and a mirror?. I was certain that this had already existed and never bothered posting anything up. ( besides the fact that I lack the technical savvy to actually make it happen- a far cry from when I ran a BBS in the early c64, Amiga, and Console days- I'm still into modding consoles)

I would certainly love play out your tunes at our monthly gathering (OPERATION UNDERGROUND @ MERGE) as well has help catalog and host tracks so that they could be accessible to the people you wnat to share them with. I already have the space via a web hosting. My thought was an FTP server that you would be able to send tunes to directly and you can link to that when sharing the files? Kind of like Xbins AKA "the usual places" for those of you familiar with the Xbox modding scene.

Producers, techies and those of us with space (or few extra coins in the stash to support an effort of this type) should spearhead this, again NOT to take anything away from this mecca of Dubstep culture but to enhance it. One of the best aspects of this scene ( i really don't like using that word) is the fact that it has become a OPEN PLATFORM, which is unlike other styles of music where its strictly crafted for Pressed releases. Peeps are sharing their original works while pressing only releases continue to maintain their market value as well.

In any case my point is to try to extend one hand to contribute while I have my other hand out "asking" to be used as an outlet to promote your works during our event (which like so many others is NOT for profit, but for the love of the music and a good time out). all while not stepping on toes or being a burden. Karma?, quid pro quo? you get the point I'm sure.
If you have things to share by all means hit me up at: jamtwo@bostown.com or send me a link. our weekly event called "MERGE" happens every friday, and on the first Friday of every month I host OPERATION UNDERGROUND @ MERGE which spotlights Dubstep, Grime, UKG and the rest. I'll post the full event info in the proper forum room.

Peace

I fucking love boston.

Glad to hear other people think this is the way forward :). Could probably set you up as a US mirror, but to be honest most web hosting accounts probably won't cut it if you want to give FTP access to other people. While most of the time they'll provide FTP access for you, the admin, to upload stuff, they don't really allow for setting up your own FTP for others to use. Getting yourself a rented dedicated host / virtual (Xen) server in the US (especially on the East coast) is pretty damn cheap though, so that could be an option. Not entirely sure that FTP is needed though. HTTP should cut it, at least for the moment.

I'm planning on writing a bit of code for this once Uni exams finish (soon, thank fuck), so that producers can see how often their shit has been downloaded, and upload their dubs to the server themselves, without having to email them to me. Could even allow people to put a little page up about their shit, but i'm not sure if that'd distract from the forums too much.

Anyway, Dubstep!
Anyone got any more tracks?
