Which company deserves the award for best software?

Post by GV1 » Sat Jul 16, 2011 8:51 pm

Who do you think deserves the award for best software? This can be a DAW, VSTi, VST or anything that aids in your audio production or workflow.

I am going to give it to Native Instruments. Much of their software product range are innovations with great UI's. I'm currently getting into Reaktor, very deep infact, and it's mind blowing. I'm not a fan of Traktor, but I do appreciate the idea and functionality behind it.

Who gets your vote and why?

Edit: I missed Roger Linn ... dude deserves 1st spot!

How do PSP compare to Waves? Never used any of PSP's products.

Native Instruments.

Reason is a runner up, it's really impressive for not having third party VSTs. Have you seen the new Reason? Going to rewire the fuck out of that 8)

I absolutely swear by PSP's Vintage Warmer. The harmonics it adds to the sound sweetens it greatly and gives it the sort of character which you could never get out of say Waves L2. I find the Wave plugins more transparent whereas PSP's add something to the sound. It depends what you want from your plugins really but I'd definitely consider PSP as a strong rival to Wave. Bear in mind I haven't tried all of either brands plugins though.

It's a tie between Native Instruments and Ableton.

D16 Group is a pretty close runner-up.

Dude... Native Instruments HANDS DOWN. Honestly, I haven't used anything by them that isn't absolutely spectacular. Whoever is creating their plugins are absolute GENIUSES. I'm blown away by new things I discover about their software all the time. I have several other plugins (lots of free ones, especially the TAL ones), but honestly, there's not much you can't do with their software, especially with all the ensembles and samplers you can get for Reaktor and Kontakt. I've never used Traktor but I've never heard anything bad about it. and the Maschine? Oh my god. The coolest piece of equipment I've ever bought. Speeds up my workflow so much, so easy to use and hands-on, and so useful. The only thing they're missing is a DAW... And Maschine is not far off at all. Now you can load VST's in to it. Hell, you can even use VST-only plugins inside an AU host in Maschine. And a close second, like someone already said... TAL. I don't know how they put these things out for free, they are just... so well done.

I'm gonna go off on a limb here and say Steinberg, why? Ummm...I don't know, maybe because they freakin' invented the VST AND ASIO! Call me crazy...but I think we'd all be in the pisser without them.

....I'm pretty sure they've got awards all ready tho.

Besides them, Imageline and Native Instruments.

Imageline because an everyday I.T. guy like myself was able to pick up the program without reading the manual and become a well skilled producer. Native instruments gets a vote because c'mon, everything they make is gold.

1. Apple (for logic with 64 bit mode, with a 32bit audio unit bridge and the built in synths and plugs)
2. Elysia (hands down the best compressors ever made)
3. Izotope (for ozone 4 with its mid/side modes on its eq and exciter)
4. NI
5. Sonnox ( for its channel strip, inflator and reverb that sound too real for its own good)
