anyway, something that actually sounds neat is layering two sines and detuning them so you get a wobbly effect due to the phasing. but hey i'm sure you're gonna tell me now that detuning your sub is bad because it creates phasing

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
then you can add some movement to the high end. Also you can turn down the higher frequencies so they are barely noticeable, but make the sub sound so much better.jrisreal wrote:what I've been trying lately is forwarding the sub to a send where I distort it and then hi-pass and bring it back in with the clean sine. It gives the sub some flavor and power and the sub can then still be heard by people without subwoofers.
Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
theres not much you can do with a pure sine sub, and your tune sounds pretty subby anyway, like mid-range is pretty low, like freq wise, its not a screamin bro bass, and you leaving the mid-range out on those bars, obviously means that you want just the pure sine, so why would you wanna do anything with it? sounds alright to me, plenty of tunes with just sine sub. but you could try like lfo to pitch like people have said, or change it up and use 808 sub for those bits, or like have short sine stabs with some snappy rhythm to it, try distorting the sub on a bus to make it warmer, so that you still have the pure sub, with some more harmonics slightly above, and then maybe lower it in the mix so its almost unoticable and then like modulate that bit.

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
thanks for all the responses guys, think I've got quite a few things to work with now. At this point it seems like I'll probably send it to another channel, overdrive/saturate it a little and high-pass it and then modulate that channel.
In terms of why I would want to modulate a pure sine - I find just hitting on certain beats without any form of modulation gets a little dull after a while.

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
Try adding a phaser or chorus to it, or modulate the panning, while pitching it down. Just for one or two notes in the whole bassline. It kind of makes it reesey and it's tight.

chad man, that kills the sub, he wants sub, mostly the questions were answered with as much as he can do and he has tried he just wanted to see if there were other things but you can throw stereo stuff on a sub. its making like a fake sub
thats like going to a prostitute that doesnt have a vagina...

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
monophonic legato is the way to go. give this kinda effect. Don't need much else - little bit of compression for character.
I think sub is all about how you play it.

when do you put stereo on low end?
I learned to always keep it mono so its clean

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
^ only when cutting to vinyl thats extremely important
BUT IT HAS TO BE SAID......
Mono subs = more punch in the club (tested by stereo and mono versions of subs on the same tune on a good rig)

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
There's a reason why when creating basslines and you split the frequencies that you leave the bottom end alone (apart from a little compression). I found that keeping my low end bass in mono gave it multitudes more presence. 3za - it's not narrow-mindedness, simply a fact. You don't stereo-widen a sub.

so would'nt that be good practice to keep in mono and mostly move with glide to give movement, instead of losing power and putting stereo on it
Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
No because if you restrict yourself to one constraint then you're instantly putting yourself in a box...
Yes it has more punch in a club but is that your angle for every track you're going to make?
I make lots of music just to put in playlists at home to listen too, some have stereo sub and some don't.
Sometimes its nice to layer a multi-band distortion on a sub, bring up the mid/high end and then put some stereo width on that mid/high end.. Its still part of the sub seeing as its one sound being pushed through a signal flow.

I also like to mixs it up abit with my ho's handjobs, blowjobs, footjobs, anal, armpitjobs, neckjobs, ect... I do what ever the fuck I want.
Still narrow mindedness in this thread, there are other styles of music were stereo subs are the norm.

but i think the op wants to keep his punch, maybe he wants stereo and then i sounded like an idiot sure but im sure he wants to keep it mono

Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
Dude, putting phase on a sub for ONE BEAT will no weaken the whole track. It's called dynamics. You don't want just a straight sub blasting the whole track.
Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
thats true, although I would rather LFO the amplitude of the sub instead of phasing it...just for my conscienceChadDub wrote:Dude, putting phase on a sub for ONE BEAT will no weaken the whole track. It's called dynamics. You don't want just a straight sub blasting the whole track.
Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
You can do whatever you want, I'm just saying that that is ONE way of modulating your sub and making it interesting.
Re: Modulating your sub - tips and techniques
true. but as far as sine waves, both do pretty much the same effect.ChadDub wrote:You can do whatever you want, I'm just saying that that is ONE way of modulating your sub and making it interesting.
