Re: A question about Vinyl releases

Post by djamesh » Tue Jul 19, 2011 2:31 pm

So my first vinyl order arrived today and...

The hole in the middle of both discs of Tempa allstars vol. 4 hasn't been bored wide enough to fit round my TTs. It hovers off the mat like some kind of floating bollocks.

Whats the script? I thought this the records would be bored by a machine that can't get it wrong lol? This happened to anyone before? I take it I'm going to have to send it back now but I wanted to check with you guys first.

Cheers

It's happened to me before. You can do what I did and get a little file and file the hole a little bigger. It won't take much to make it fit.

Take a pair of scissors, open em up and insert 1/2 of em into the hole, and inna circular motion scrape a little plastic out of there till it fits over the spindle perfectly. no need to send em back.

Same on my copy of that.

Word of advice to the guy who started this thread, most old vinyls are cheap on discogs and ebay, its the exception that is expensive.

Keep an eye on this forum too people are always starting threads about selling shit.Couple of weeks back i got one of my all time favourites Moments in love(caspa remix) on white label for a couple of quid.To me its priceless.

Happy hunting, you wont regret it :)

It really varies between each release to be honest, some become very sought after and fetch high prices and some sell for similar prices to what they sold for 10 years ago, it all depends on rarity and how desired it is. The tracks your talking about though are going to be priced as the peeps have stated before. I started buying vinyl this year and am in the same boat as you but I brought serato too, i've sold that now though to fund outlook so i'm building my record collection up. Slightly frustrating at the moment because I like to mix at so many different tempos, i'll want to by say a 120bpm release and won't have enough tracks to have a full mix with. Getting there steadily though and will never look back at venturing into the land of wax.

Lots of clubnights around me sometimes have vinyl swap things, where everyone brings some records they don't want, and swap them. There might be somewhere around you.

Check in your local record stores and charity shops etc. You won't really get DMZ stuff in Oxfam, but pretty much every shop selling 2nd hand records has at least one good 12".

And if ordering from Discogs, try and find a seller with a few records you want, because you can get raped on postage buying individually.

Cheers for all the info guys, I feel a lot more knowledgeable now :4:

Just got to sort out my TTs now. Some tunes make the needle skip like a nutter. Made a massive post on djforums to see if any of them can help me but its down... again lol.

Have you got the counter weight/anti-skate set properly? May just be something simple.

this, worked for me.
It's about dropping a track at the wrong speed, and it sounding better than the real thing.

Is that the seller who charges ridiculously large amounts for pretty much everything?

Can't help but laugh at that guy, posted about them before in the SNH, this is taken from my post there:

Omar-S - 004 (Still in stock in a lot of places) - £224.99
Skream - Midnight Request Line/I (Permanently in stock everywhere) - £194.99
Loefah/Coki - Disko Rekah/All Of A Sudden - £124.99
Mount Kimbie - Maybes £124.99
Zomby - Zomby EP £94.99
Soul Jazz - Box Of Dub £79.99
Martyn - Broken/Shadowcasting £79.99
Benga & Coki - Night £74.99
Benga - Crunked Up £69.99
Ramadanman - Fall Short/Work Them £59.99

Pretty much all of those are still in stock somewhere for the original price.

I believe so mate. I have 1210mk 2s, and stanton 500 cartidges. I've experimented with loads of different weights and anti-skates settings. Currently got it set at 3.5g and 1.7 anti-skate. Some records play fine, some skip really badly, and on some they just sound a bit distorted. This even happens with the speakers turned off, so it isnt the sound causing them to skip. I think it could be the cartridges, as I've tried the records on another turntable (just an old 80s one that is used for playing records) and they all work fine.

It skips in exactly the same place and in the same way on the records that don't work.

I did buy them second hand, but they seem to be in really good nick, although the cartridges look a bit tired.

All the records are brand new.

I'm using the thick rubber mats that came with the TTs to play them at the minute, as I'm not trying to mix them.

What do you reckon?

If the 500's are skipping with full weight on then it will be the stylus on those. If it's the V3 replacement stylus' are £16.95 each on Chemical. With second hand decks I'd be tempted just to buy new carts anyway so I know they're in good shape - don't want to risk damaging your records.

In terms of the rare vinyl, you'll have to fork out - luckily I got most of my rare records before they got TOO expensive (£25 for Goat Stare, £25 for Alicia, £20 each for Bury the Bwoy and Lean Forward). I did get burned buying Changes though, paid £30 for an original press then it got repressed like 2 weeks later lol.

Unfortunately buying DMZ records to trade later won't work either, they are pressing alot more copies than they used to - the last 3 releases are still in stock everywhere and have been out quite a while now.

My advice would be just drop the money on them, you get hurt once with the cash hit but then you have the record and it always seems worth it in the end!

Echodub Loves Volume 2 - White Room
FTW Records Digital - Panic Room

I seem to have been able to sort it. I saw a video on youtube and the bloke had his weights on the wrong way round so I thought "fuck it, I'll try that". It's worked haha. Very odd. I think I'll invest in some new cartridges anyway though, these look like they've been around the block.

You shouldn't need to reverse your weights unless you're a budding Q-Bert, the less weight you can run with while mixing normally, the better.

I think thats why I need some new cartridges, cause it's currently the only way I can make all my records play. I'll have a fiddle with it all when I get back from my hols.

Yea I'd only advise reversing your weights if you're scratching, it will cause too much damage otherwise. I think a pair of new Stanton 500's only about £70 anyway so definately worth it!
