Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
Yes, bands have mixdowns. Even more so than with EDM.
example:
Drums are usually megacompressed, blended with samples(yes, just like you do with dubstep and other edm), somewhat eq'd and miced with a lot of mics to ensure they stay isolated and mixable. Maaaaaaan I tell you. Getting a snare sounding fucking blasting in your face is hard with mic'd drums. if the drummer plays the hihat too loud for example, the only thing you're gonna hear after compression is the friggin' hi-hat. There's so much stuff you can fuck up. Having the mic towarded too much to the rim of the snare = super annoying ringy snare. And yeah, drummers usually suck monkey balls.
So yeah, I'd say band music requires more actual mixing than EDM. The "mixing" is kind of done in EDM when you tweak the patches on synths and well, the drum samples don't have any bleed or "mistakes" in them so it's easier to find a working balance.

In deathcore metal they use triggers
No need for micing any drums except the cymbals

recorded a kit using 2 mics the other day, one centered overhead from about 2 meters away, and one on the left about 1.5 meters from the snare (not as high as first mic)
it just as an experiment, and it came out lush

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
Well its a different way of making music from us. I wasnt sure if they had mixing engineers or whatnot. I was thinking maybe they play it, record it, and be done with it. Wasnt sure if they cared about quality because alot of the time, rockers resort to clipping to make their songs louder.Electric_Head wrote:Just sit and think about what you`re asking.jrisreal wrote:Makes sense. Idk why so many troll responses. I had a legit question and am not familiar with how this type of music works. Got my answer so thanks to the helpful people.
You`ll know why everyone is surprised at your question.
How can you produce music but still ask if a band has mixdowns?
This is like general music knowledge.

It's not really that different, if you get 2 songs one electronic, one rock or whatever played by a band, the mixdown process would be pretty simular, at the end of the day your job is just to make it sound better, boost necessary frequencies, cut unnecessary frequencies, etc.

Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
and when you have bands like Pendulum they mix EDM with ROCK and get crazy good results. Rob Swire is a beast of an engineer/musician though.
Read an interview where he stated he used 9 seperate mics on their drummers snare alone while recording immersion, only ended up using 2 of the mic tracks though.

Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
err, well you won't catch me micing a snare with nine mics, but apparently the producer used two of them. Which as far as #s of mic's go, pretty standard.
Probably just wanted to open up his options down the road for the mix process. no need to shit on people's ideas/experiments
u wanna record a band with your laptop mic, go ahead. Might as well use your cell phone's voicemail box.
obviously if you want it to sound live, you can track it live with bleed, less mics, etc. Or you could try to cut the record well, and get good results in the mix.

Calm it. I'm only joking.
...Well, not about the shit album thing.
Having 9 mics on a snare doesn't make a good engineer, even if you don't use them all. It more than likely shows that you don't know what you want, or that you find it hard to make decisions. I've seen producers try 10 different mics on a snare, but they made the decision before it got to recording.

Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
Travertine tile though, makes all the dif.
Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
well there may be some logic to having that many mic's on a snare. There may be certain frequencies you hear at certain angles that you don't get at other angles. Similar concept to what they did for gunshot sounds in the movie Inception. They used quite a few different mic's each in a line following the bullet's path. This way, they captured each point of the gunshot and combined the different elements for a better recording of the gunshot. This could also be done with multiple mic's on the same snare.
Re: Do bands have mixdowns?
Haha Jr Ud be amazed at how hard people work to produce good instrumental music...
and once u get it u realize most professionally recorded bands sound ultra synthetic.. something uve got used to ...
a good example of that would be Smells like teen spirit ... listen to each element... it has to be one of the most beautiful mixes ever done (apparently it was actually remixed by Andy Wallace after Butch Vig failed to capture the essence of the composition in the eye/ear of Kurt Cobain)
its a science. and these guys work REALLY HARD.. and they have to record all the stuff too
everything we do actually comes from that imo.

Yeah, from my experience mixing my bands album, a lot more goes into recording/mixing a band than an electronic tune. You'd be amazed.
