Bass Cannon Tutorial (Massive)

Post by Nizmo » Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:00 am

This is a tutorial to make a similar synth to the one heard in Flux Pavillion's Bass Cannon track. This is just the raw synth, add some reverb and a vocoder for best results. Resample and add Distortion for to add some grit to it. Also be careful with the scream on filter 1, it can really alter the sound! I know its not perfect but its pretty close!

Sounded like you had the wrong notes, Bass Cannon notes glide C down to A, yours didn't sound like that.

I like your patch better than flux's

I'm a huge flux fan, but I dislike that song.
...in my opinion

Seems to be all about formant waves when it comes to achieving that screechy whistle bass sound. not saying I nailed it either, but with a formant saw and little else i got the lead for this song (brotip- skip to 52ish seconds for the bass). I can upload a screenshot of this preset if people want.

you can automate the envelopes and LFOs how you want, but thats the basic sound coming out of massive. didn't really muck with it too much for that song.

If you wanted to achieve the gliding effect heard in bass cannon you could edit envelope #1 on all of the pitches as seen on the oscillator view by bringing that value up to around 5ish and then messing with envelope 1, if that makes any sense.

Thanks guys, i thought i would get seriously gunned for posting it. In the tutorial it is lacking ohmnicide and of course frequency splitting it, which with a little tweeking it does sound like the original. I know from making the videos i have learnt a hell of alot about Massive and Cubase in general (I was a Reason Freak). I am in the process of making some nice deep and warm basses for the minimal kind of Dubstep to cater for all tastes. I hope the videos can help some beginners out there.

LET THE BASS CANNON KICK IT *high-pitched screaching noise*

I think "treble cannon" would be a more apt name for the song...

There is plenty of bass in the tune. but you are correct in the sense that the real hook is the dentist drill.
Anyways this tutorial sounds NOTHING like bass cannon :corndance:

actual shite

Sounding exactly like other people who are notoriously annoying actually helps people get further in music.
(a)True
(b)False

I have an opinion but you don't need to know it.
Answer honestly, any grade is a good grade innit?
A conglomeration of my old tearout tunes I like, and my new ones I don't

Maybe a tad harsh, but am I seriously the only one here who doesn't think it sounds at all like Bass Cannon? If you're gonna post up a tutorial you should at least get the notes in the melody right, which you haven't, and furthermore it doesn't really sound like bass cannon at all.

Personally i've had better results getting Flux style sounds out of Albino. Also for Bass Cannon there is a touch of vibrato but it has a long attack so it comes in at the end of the note.
