this style of dubstep always was something I liked.

same here. this is such a fucking beast it' s unbelieveable. the drop always gets me, the tension i build up before it is unbearable. sadly none of my friends seem to get it

the intense synths alone with the vocal sample before the drop is one of my favorite parts to mix into another track because you can tease so much different shit between songs while it plays. not just an amazing song but a great one to mix in too.

These are the guys who i give a lot of airtime to and who definitely fit into the mould.....

Best thing to do is listen to my Sub FM show which reps the sound from a lot of different angles.... As has been said before on this forum a million times don't get too much into classification tho. Breakstep is an overall aesthetic covering the merging of dubstep, breakbeat, house, bass, jungle and loads of other stuff.... Really i think it was relevant in a sound in it's own right back when people substituted the word Breakstep for 'breakbeat garage' but as we know this evolved into early dubstep and when halfstep took over breakstep went underground and has exploded into a million different sounds and ideas. Lots of great music to be discovered but the use of breakbeats over 130-150bpm bass music is not an exclusive genre....

biggles thren. been a while since i caught your show - need to get back on it

was just listening to a search & destroy b2b distance rinse show from 2005 and it had so many amazing breakstep tunes on it. will upload it tonight if i remember. the show was only a few days after dubstepforum was created and it was interesting to hear them talking about it - certainly a far cry to how it is today

also strange to think that breakstep was the brostep of it's day with people arguing about it being a danger to "dubstep"

breakstep precursed dubstep
& you're inferring that it came after
surely breaks with a step at 140 bpm came first
even before dark garage got up?
I mean Mala says that he didn't particularly dig 4wd's breakstep
so started DMZ's dubstep forum.

no idea what you mean about dmz's dubstepforum but yeah dmz was a way to get away from the breakstep etc of fwd and do the "meditate on bassweight" thing

it depends at what point you count dubstep as being dubstep and not garage but you can definitely see a difference in tunes by horsepower and jammin (zinc) that were both being made in 2001, and you could say both were garage and both precursors to dubstep/breakstep

breakbeat garage definitely precursed dubstep (if you mean the halfstep side of things) but i think what most people are talking about in this thread is breakstep as a side of dubstep rather than the more explicitly garagey stuff

I think back in those days the main concern was that dubstep had a separate identity to breaks and dnb. When halfstep took over in 2006 there was definitely a feeling that the halfstep beat was fresh and new and very different to the 2 aforementioned genres...Obviously it quickly became a key component to the dubstep 'formula' and rhythmic diversity began to die out within the genre....

The big difference i think is that breakstep's production levels were far in advance of dubstep's (generally)....If you look at Boxcutter's Brood, Search & Destroy, Toasty etc the production levels were far higher than for example dubstep or grime at the time...Not saying that the 'dubstep' tracks weren't heavy or good.

yeah the fear of going down the path of dnb was massive back then. i've lost count of the amount of debates about avoiding the pitfalls of dnb there must have been on here (lot of good all that talking did us eh?

fresh and new very quickly become dull and derivative though didn't it? i used to love halfstep (i remember once drunkenly saying that the snare was my favourite musical instrumental because it was so much at the forefront of halfstep

), but now i pretty much switch off unless it's got some decent hi hats to keep it flowing along. breakbeats ftw

Yeah sure, but 'industrial' isn't really what I was looking for in that thread, hard breakstep might have been a better classification, but who even gives a fuck, I just wanna hear the tunes.
