Fat Cats club formed to "fight piracy".
Viacom, Microsoft, Disney, MPAA and RIAA and 24 other large corporations have gotten together in a special club called Copyright Alliance. Because, you know, they just don't have a voice on their own, poor things.
No doubt this is only to protect consumers and look out for independent artists. Finally, someone to stand up for the little people. Of course.
Also, pay close attention to the Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2007, in which (seriously) is suggested that some copyright crimes warrant a life sentence. And also. there will be a new crime called "attempted copyright infringement". That's when you have a computer, an internet connection and the .gov decides you need to go away.
Things are indeed very rotten in Denmark^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Bushville.
If this is is such a huge problem for society, yet noone speaks publicly about how fixed blanket fees for consumers + free distribution would solve the "problem" on one fell swoop?
Pay a monthly subscription to the same entities businesses pay to for broadcasting rights, and then download the music instead of paying for useless plastic cases and discs. That would be too fair, I suppose, and it wouldn't let the fat boys play with their DRM-enabled willies in public.
This pisses me off to no end. Buy me a pint and get a free rant any day.

As an independent artist, I'm mostly concerned with how this affects my ability to create revenue around what I do. My implication and insight here being that large labels do what they do not out of evil, but in pursuit of profit and cementing their oligopoly - and competing with me and my friends. I am interested in our competition, and I'm interested in learning what's going on in the business overall - not because I care about britney, timbalake and nickelback, but because I care about our little corner of the market directly targeted by careless and carefree giants.robbiej wrote:no one is getting life in prison for d/l a movie....![]()

The consumer aspect, as you mention, is definitely secondary for people on the forum, and myself. As independent producers and small publishers, however, it's about as relevant as it gets - and claiming that simply choosing not to learn or discuss our own market's workings would somehow benefit us seems quite odd and counterproductive.
