Anyone here build their own hardware gear?

Post by decree » Mon Aug 01, 2011 7:22 pm

Just curious if anyone builds or has built anything in the past. I am in the middle of a project now and would love to talk and such with someone on this forum who may be doing similar things.

not really proper studio gear or anything but I built a fuzz pedal for guitar once, but it pretty much fell to bits and I lost the schematic (which i pretty much made up loosely based on a Fuzz Face) so it's sitting in my room with a few wires sticking out that I have no idea where to put back :(

anyway, this is what it sounded like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9M74CXkuG0

I'm aware of a few people here that have built some stuff. I've sworn that I'm going to build something by years end, even just a noise synth.

in 1997 i built a feed back machine/tape destroyer buy tacking a boom box and extending the wires on the tape head, extending the wires on one speaker and then using the wires for the second speaker as an output. started with the idea i could record on tapes, cut them up and using it like free dubplates for scatching efx. didnt work very well so i turned it into the most annoying feedback machine ever. i lived with my partents at the time so you can imagine how much they it.

Heres my thread on my DIY creations

Built a couple of synths so far, only from kits, not designed anything yet.

Been stupidly busy last two weeks but next project is some techno box built from 808 clone components and some other bits. Should be fun! Noise generator thingy with light dependant resistors (LDRs) i made but need to solder up a permanent version. Sounded pretty sick tbh.

Also a programmer and a second filter (jupiter8 :U: ) for the shruthi in my thread.

I think you pmd me a while ago (xmas) and i pmd you back, never heard anything back. :corncry: :cornlol:

yea I built guitar pedals in the past. basically, its not hard at all but you need to learn how to solder correctly first. finding a bad connection can be a bitch, a bit like trying to figure out which of the Christmas lights is broken!

Heh. Cool. Erm, well not much further TBH; i have a schematic of a very basic initial version, more of a block diagram really; but just been ridiculously busy recently, not had chance to finish. Did finish my x0xbox tho. Getting a few components in soon, and found a midi syncd LFO chip which could be perfect; geezer sent me some samples in march and theyve still not arrived :corntard:

Ironically, i have yet more decorating to do in next 2 weeks as wife and my son are away; but hoping to get a lot more free time as well. Ill jump back on it.

Nice one.

Ben

I have never built from scratch either in terms of design or kit form but have a custom built eq and I have
done a fair amount of equipment modding. There is a lot to go wrong when building your own gear and you need
lots of time as well. Time is the main issue in fact, even modding stuff takes a lot of time to research.
SafeandSound Mastering : PMC IB1S, MANLEY Massive Passive (Hardware), Summit Audio DCL-200, HCL Varis Vari Mu, Custom stereo linked 5 band mastering EQ.

Yeah I already can tell, laid out a plan and started putting together parts I ordered...
I keep missing a part and it stalls me for days
