The morals of sampling

I sample because I generally don't think synthesized sounds contribute to the feel I want in my songs. I'll use them for pads and basses, but I'd rather have a guitar or piano or whatever for a lead because that's where my background is. Lots of the time I'll play and record the guitar or piano myself, but sometimes the qualities and feel of a sound in someone elses track will inspire me and I'll grab it from there, chop it up, etc. and use it. Same with drums. I love fucking with breaks and layering them with other drum samples to create a way more natural sounding beat than I could with a synth.

id just like to say, that was probably the worst thing i have ever heard. you hear people moan at brostep producers for just using random sounds with no correlation to each other but this just takes it to a whole new level

Also I've never listened to this guy but according to a friend of mine the artist Pretty Lights uses only recognizable samples to create his music?
Supposedly he doesn't sell his music (for obvious reasons). I think that is alright because it seems to be more of a tribute to his musical influences.

Still not 100% sure on who this guy is, can anyone confirm?

I've listened to a handful of his tracks. There are things I recognize but most tracks are instrumental and don't just include cuts from Now That's What I Call Music and an acapella pack from Pirate Bay like Girl Talk. I'm not a huge fan of Pretty Lights but he's actually got some talent.

When we say sampling, do we mean drums, instruments and vocals? Or do we mean other people's work?

I think there's a clear distinction between Daft Punk sampling instrument hits and interpreting it their own way with their own style, and Cyrex sampling entire basslines with notes and no modification.

I'm with you on that GothamHero, sampling Disco and Funk records is the best thing ever. There is no way you could recreate those quality sounds without a recording studio, an orchestra, and some very expensive kit.

Haha, one album, man. One album.

I'm talking about their overall work. Homework being a main focal point here. After their homework album alot of their fans showed little to no respect towards other music. They wanted the discovery album to be very diverse and different from any other dance album. They made the songs better. They are sampled based musicians.

My 2p. Sampling is a great skill to have. Hell, you can create some of the most creative sounds by sampling your own self ala bass resampling, etc, etc. I would say greatness comes from a good blend of synthesized sound and sampled (with modification) sounds.

Honestly, got no problem with sampling. If it's done creatively, then fair play. One of my recent tunes was entirely samples I'd taken from somewhere else, but not one person whose heard it has gone "THIEF!" and spat in my general direction. It's what you do with the samples that matters.

Plus as well...we have the DSF sample pack contest each month, which is ONLY sampling and no synthesis. Obviously these samples are from other tunes/packs/etc, hell the amen I've included in the pack I've put together (watch this space ) has been lifted wholesale from somewhere.
