Re: Production + Narcotics
I love being opiated when I produce, drugs and music are my two favorite hobbies and for me they go hand in hand. For some reason I get this extra motivation and my workflow picks up dramatically. Its been in my daily routine for a while now, work -> go home and shower -> chew 4 (10/325 Hydrocodone/APAP) -> twist spliff -> get to producing. However recently I have been slacking on the smoking as working in the tx heat for 12 hours a day (been above 100 dF for the last 3 weeks) has been wearing me out and when I smoke too much after that I just get too damn tired.

I'll listen to it the next morning, wonder what the fuck I was thinking, delete it and write something decent.

Re: Production + Narcotics
I'm almost always at least a little high when I produce. When I get super blasted and try to produce I usually get lost in an infinite vortex and don't really do anything.
I've tried producing on low doses of mushies and it worked really well actually. Got down the ideas I wanted even though they sounded VERY rough.
The only thing I do good when really fucked up is play guitar.. So under those circumstances I usually pass on the midi and just spend some time with my mic.

Weed increased my arrangment skills but decreases my synthesis skills. I like to make a few interesting synth patches when sober, then smoke a bowl and mess around with them until I come up with a good melody.
Re: Production + Narcotics
I always thought producing on mushrooms or lsd would be the best most creative session ever. When I tried to produce on mushrooms I couldent get anything started and easily got intimated by Reasons rack, and soon after had to go outside on a nature walk.
I don't get too much done while stoned either. Usually end up playing with reverbs and delays until I get sick of it a few hours later.

I'm not a doctor, and I haven't even played one on TV, but in my opinion weed destroys your executive functions. People just tend to make shit decisions when stoned. There are A LOT of decisions to be made while producing. A couple of bad decisions equals a total dead end for a track.
But, as we all seem to know, weed can alert you to sounds and potential opportunities that you regularly would miss. IMO weed can be a part of your workflow if it only occupies a stage, or even several stages of your process.
Narcotics, as I'm becoming aware (have been taking some prescription pain relievers), don't interfere with your executive functions. They may cloud other aspects of your consciousness, but it seems the executive is still sitting at his desk. I find I am more conscious of groove (not the micro groove, weed is better for that, more the macro groove, how the song is grooving). But then I'm not taking a whole handful of painkillers, so I can't really say. I can barely feel them when I'm taking them.
Both of those drugs are hugely addictive, and I wouldn't encourage anybody to take either.
To those that have "artistic hangovers" what happens when you listen back to those stoney tracks while you are stoned on subsequent occasions? Does it still sound good, does everything sound good, or does it sound shit? I've heard some really inspired stuff from stoney minds, but often the work can only be accessed in that state. People that are successful in the stoney state seem to have a process to making their stuff, alleviating pressure on that missing executive, and just vibe successfully.

I usually just start drinking coffee until I tweak out then produce.
Going to try some buzzed producing right now.
Other than that I haven't smoked since January.

if you don't have a very clearly defined workflow than good luck getting anything done at all when you're stoned. you're just gonna end up drifting around. but if you're staying conscious, and know where the road you're going is taking you and what every stop is along the way, then it can just make the ride that much wilder yo
also while i highly endorse both ket and wet for producing, its useful to have a buddy around who can tell you if something's starting to sound like shit or not, cuz although your creative ability is enhanced (or just altered), your perceptive abilities are totally fucked.

How did I forget coffee? I've heard people say producing is inextricably linked to smoking weed for them. Some how, that has turned into coffee for me. When I drink coffee out of the studio, bad things happen, I just get helluv frustrated. I built some type of Pavlovian link to coffee and making music.
Nothing better than getting up 8am, sleepy, boot the whole thing up, make some breakfast, read some shits, drink some coffee, by 9am, just stoked to start working! Joy for me right now.

I drink a shitload of coffee when producing, don't really notice the effects of the caffeine though.

For me, the tunes I produce when I'm stoned don't just sound shitty when I sober up. I can smoke up, spend two hours fiddling with something, pause for 10 minutes and when I come back I realise that I've left a steaming turd in ableton. More broadly I find that when I'm stoned I do a shitty job no matter what task is at hand. Except watching TV. I'm great at thatnowaysj wrote:To those that have "artistic hangovers" what happens when you listen back to those stoney tracks while you are stoned on subsequent occasions? Re: Production + Narcotics
I thought drinking coke(soda) and staying up till 6am worked...
Turns out..I drank water last night and actually wrote something worth uploading on my soundcloud
It hasn't been "Mastered" yet, but i'll finish it today!
Just thought it was weird how I couldn't write jack S#^T when drinking soda...lol
Clean as a whistle while producing...and if I get stressed or annoyed I go outside and smoke a camel
(trying to quit, down to my last cigarette)
blah I ramble a lot haha! Bloody A&W next to me

we've all seen this right? http://www.trinity.edu/jdunn/spiderdrugs.htm
i think that a lot of drugs can impact your performance. i've tried producing when stoned, and end up twiddling knobs on synths for hours. if i drink alcohol i just lose interest and don't get anywhere. a line of a certain white powder makes me produce fairly quick, but the tune didn't sound so good the next day. i got adhd and am waiting for the doctors to give me some ritalin, so hopefully that'll help me focus, but for now the only thing i do is drink coffee.

Not everyone's the same. Weed may not be conducive to production for you, but for others it can be.nowaysj wrote:I'm not a doctor, and I haven't even played one on TV, but in my opinion weed destroys your executive functions.
