New fl studio file with limiter

Post by ctang » Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:45 pm

Is there any reason why the fl studio limiter on the master channel boosts the master by 5.5 db?? i actually just recently noticed. I now created a new template without it.

yes there is a reason. it compresses the signal, and to make up for volume loss, it adds 5.5 db of gain. Just image-line trying to help you with mastering...
...in my opinion

hmm, yeah but isnt this undesirable because ur mixing at +5.5db instead of 0db?

Yes take it off, no idea what they were thinking putting that on default with fairly extreme settings. People's mixdowns are often bad when leaving it on. I've worked with a few people over the years who used FL and they had it on, and as soon as I took it off the sounds were all over the place and had to be mixed down all over again. If it's left on in the mix and hitting 0dB, a mastering engineer will most likely have to bring the overall volume down anyway if he is going to attempt to process the tune, so it's not very useful in the long run and ultimately just kills dynamics.
