Twenty shows deep and no doubt our sound's changed a bit in that time. From drum n bass and analogue guest mixes to the rotation of Keith P, Kamikaze Djs and Raynulds serving up our favorite new plates on a fortnightly basis, it seems a new thread would be in order for the shows, closer to house than ever before.

Keith P on decks for the 20th show for Awkward Movements Sessions, and a proper journey it turned in to. With the sun out, it was one of those record sessions that just felt right and flowed naturally...to the point of forgetting to introduce tracks until halfway through.

Nothing but wax for the first half busting through some summer time house and boogie vibes from Fudge Fingas, the mysterious Love Unlimited collective, Floating Points, Head High aka Shed and that limited plate from Dehnert, amongst others. Going on to some forthcoming bits from Semtek's Don't Be Afraid label, Vessel about to drop on Left Blank and the incredible vocals of Zaki Ibrahim forthcoming on 2nd Drop.

With some Theo Parrish and Mr Raoul K mixed in as well and ending on one of our favourite new artists, Chairman Kato, the show crosses most of what we've learnt about in the first 19 sessions, and with the discovery of more music, hopefully crossing some of the boundaries between what gets played out and what's dropped at home.

Another guest mix we've been hanging out for, this time coming from our go to photo man and long time drum n bass raver Timmy K. We were well surprised then when he delivered over 80 minutes of an ill party mix without a single amen break in sight.

Massive crossover with genres and release years, ranging from Roy Davis Jr, to Joy Orbison, Night Slugs crew, Booka Shade and classic Rolando on Underground Resistance. Daojia steps in for a mix we've been waiting for for time, serving up a massive 90 min session. Reppin' the now established Electrikal crew from Scotland, the young producer has been heavily tipped as the one to watch for a few months now, and here he shows us why.

Dropping a load of unreleased and forthcoming joints amongst established remixes and tunes by the likes of Mala, Toki Monsta and 2562 go in with his own crew and Povertyblock label family, folk he's teamed up with and general inspirations from his ways including Taz, Morphamish and Mako. For good measure it's also got some deeper tracks from otherwise tear-out producers and he's even thrown his own calling card 'Riego Street' in the mix. Big.

Part one of what we're told will be a two part series from Jimmy Monsta Funk, who's been spinning and collecting wax for over 25 years, and one of the finest ambassadors for house and techno we know. And although his mixes generally capture the junction where the two meet, this offering is about as pure house as you'll get from him.

A showcase of new and old tracks (including a 1998 track he's dusted down from friend Lou Robinson aka Trackmaster Lou of Scan 7 working under the name Allegry with Reggie Curry) that incorporates sounds from the last 20 or so years, across 90 minutes. Enjoy the ride.

Yeah man I think he proper nailed it. All wax, no preparation or touch ups, just came home from work one day and dropped it.
All these guys who came up in the 90s playing house before digital and when playing 5 hour sets week in week out was the norm are just amazing to watch spin.

Not that there's anything wrong with the way things have gone, just a different art form in many ways.

In other label news Andres (Mahogani Music) has delivered the Low Rises remix we've been waiting for. The whole plate - the 12" edition of Science and Romance EP from Chairman Kato, which will also feature the Ekoplekz Analogue Replekz flip-up of Usual Drama - is getting mastered next week, and kicking off a big few months for us. Previews going up soon, but if you do legitimately want to check it out early get in touch.

With the likes of Jimmy Monsta Funk and Raynulds pulling out 90 minute mixes lately I thought I’d step up, instead of doing a traditional radio show. Starting off with some slow-mo and disco tinged house it then movies in to funky and techno then coming back down to the 4/4 bump. Bits from Mike Dehnert, Maya Jane Coles and Max D as well as some forthcoming joints from the Don’t Be Afraid and Clone labels ending on a grower from the latest Old Apparatus 10”, 26 tracks that'll fit on a 90 minute cassette.

Back for his second sessions of the year Timmy K takes it deeper than his last offering, striking an enviable balance of club joints and underground mixing. Objekt opens and closes, Juan Atkins remixed by Worthy, Boddika and the massive remix of Hyetal done by Fantastic Mr Fox all make appearances, alongside a load of digital only joints that make a damn good argument for controller DJing.

70 minute mix, recorded live using Traktor with a Vestax VCI-100 controller.

Coming in for a guest mix on Awkward Movements Sessions, G.Davies hits us with a sterling 45 minutes of tracks that we’re privileged to host. As a producer and DJ the man’s gaining the props he deserves through dope mixes and tracks he’s been throwing up. Opening with Sunn O))) and closing with another record on Southern Lord whilst somehow fitting in a load of funky and bass in between. Swamp 81, a handful of Hotflush and joints from Experimental Audio Research and Commix flipped up by A Made Up Sound among those fitting in nicely.

Awkward Movements Sessions #33 - NKC

Another session we've been looking forward to dropping for time, NKC (or NKC Productions) steps in to the mix with a mix recorded live on two CDJs. WIth a couple of 12" releases (including AWK003) this year already and another forthcoming he never ceases to amaze us; pretty much everything he produces is brilliant.

Awkward Movements Sessions #34 - Jimmy Monsta Funk

Over two hours of techno and house, mixed live,one-take on two turntables, nothing but wax. Not only as music educator but as a DJ too Jimmy Monsta Funk is proper next level, especially here in his element where the majority of the tracks are either from Detroit or influenced by the music of Detroit.

There's old electronica from The Black Dog, classic big room techno from Funk D'Void, electro from Albert Van Abbe (through the prism of Heinrich Mueller aka Gerald Donald aka one half of Drexciya), old school bangers from Chicago (Mark the 909 King and Roy Davis Jr), a 20 year old Belgian techno track from Code Red (aka Oliver Adams, one of the kings of Belgian New Beat), tracks covering most European nations (France, Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, Holland, Norway and Sweden) and even a tracks from Israel and Russia.

Techno both old and new, from all over the world via the Motor City, a testament to a genre that represents past, present and future.....

Awkward Movements Sessions #35 - That F**king Boy

Can’t share that much about That Fucking Boy to be honest. He’s got absolutely no internet presence, but as a massive Kamikaze fan he's been in touch since we first moved the shows to Samurai.fm, and has been sending us through some brilliant bits from thereon in. A bit like Daojia, he seems to pop up for a few weeks then disappear for months on end, occasionally dropping in emails to tell us we've got some obscure techno fact wrong on the blog.

Having been off decks for most of that time, it was the promo files for the forthcoming Science & Romance plate that got him off his ass to put a show together. An absolute electronic journey sitting around the 110bpm mark, ping ponging across tempos as the mood fits. Pure emotion on the turntables with a selection that starts with Ekoplekz remixing Chairman Kato and ends on Rammellzee vs. K-Rob, with Peaking Lights, Analogue Solutions, Bethany Skirt, Balam Acab and Ras G among those slotted in between. All vinyl with the exception of the one about to be pressed up.

Awkward Movements Sessions #36 - Kamikaze

Over two hours of underground (and mostly electronical) goodness as Paul of Kamikaze steps in for a new Awkward Movements Sessions. Dropping some proper experimental joints in with some new favourites we've been vibing on or waiting to hear. Stoked that we introduced him to the term 'regurgaplate' last week and it's now appeared in his blurb for the show. Ah, the universality of Sgt Pokes.

Greetings all. Container just won't go away. This white vinyl monster on Spectrum Spools rears its head twice more in this edition for Awkward Movements Sessions. Astounded by the thing. And that Machinedrum album, better late than never, that, fo' sure. And there's a new Farben record, and that's pretty special too.

Anyway, apart from those bits, be sure to tune in for some plucked and bowed loveliness from Julia Holter, Rachel's, and Kid Koala, some beefy barrelhouse blues from Speckled Red, a little post-punk darkness from Ike Yard, and a beautiful slice of drone metal from Barn Owl.

Also this time, 2562 drops a hefty technoid belter, Mark Ernestus does his bit for the yellow-sleeved Honest Jons series, and Mississippi Corner is as action-packed as ever, with some astounding new finds from Madagaskira, Mali, Egypt, and The Deep South, whilst in dubland that Studio One DJ compilation continues to get a battering with tunes this time from Prince Far I and a literal scorcher from Count Machuki. The rudest track of the show comes courtesy of Hecker, but a close second comes from Angel, the noisy collaborative work of Dirk Dresselhaus and Ilpo Vaisanen on Editions Mego.

In other collaborations, Pleq gets busy with Marihiko Hara to devastatingly beautiful effect. Oh yeah, and I learnt a Pokesism last week - regurgaplate, a term the Sgt apparently uses to about a plate that comes back around. Now for me this is the finest word on the planet, and a perfect excuse to kick-start a repeat slot for tunes that simply refuse to go away. First return to the vomitdeck is for Function, and his spectacular remix of Gregor Tresher. Please don't let my unseasonably slow responses put you off two of the finest hours of music you'll hear all week.
