Carts and Styli for dubstep

Post by apfrod » Tue Mar 14, 2006 12:49 pm

My needles are a bit worn and I'm getting distortion and the odd skip on these loud, heavy dubstep tunes. They're probably cut as loud as vinyl can go!

So before I part with the shekels for some new ones has anyone got any recommendations or will a fresh pair of Stanton 500 AL-II's be sufficient to handle the sheer weight?

What are the bass specialists rocking these days? Maybe turn this into a poll or something.

My needles strain under the pressure too. No skips but a little distortion at times.

I'm using Ortofon Concorde Pro S. Dunno if they're any good or what really. I'd too like to know what the best needles are for handling bass heavy shit.

Not sure if they're best for bass but I been using Shure M-447 for about 3 years now, I skratch a bit (badly) and I Love em! These boys wont skip in an earthe quake!

I've heard some say they wear your records out quicker but I havent noticed. Cant recomend them enough!!!!

Ortofons are my personal choice. Solidly made, loud, etc. Bit heavy, though. Might be willing to switch if I was playing dubs...

What about the White labels? Some friends of mine swear by 'em...

Shure SC35Cs for me. Not that I'm much of a DJ but they're cheap and they sound plenty good to me on a nice system. They only seem to jump out on warped vinyl. Otherwise they're pretty solid, although they look like they're holding on for dear life when I turn the motor off on a real bassy wobbler. Not sure if it's an alignment problem or just the nature of the beast.

Im using the stanton 980SA's. Bought them about 2 years ago as an upgrade to the 500's & they are imho the best all rounder's out there

... I gotta go someplace else to get my shit. The guys that work across the road from my job look at me funny when I say dubstep or grime ... I been using ortofons ... but I dunno now, its an expensive thing t' experiment wif tho, trial n error style.

Shure M447's if youre cutting dubs, nice rounded nib, doesn't cut the hell outta your dubplates like ortofons, bit more bottom end and higher volume too, can't go wrong. :)

The Sure M44G's are almost identical to the M447's, but apparently sound a little nicer in the top end. Trade off is slightly less unskipability, but they are still solid.
I can't say I ever have skipping issues with 'em, and I scratch alot. And of course, they still got the big bottom end and high output volume of the M447's.

All needles are pale in comparison to the Shure M44-7's.

These have the best bass response/volume of any cart, and of course takes a hell of a lot of vibration for these babys to skip... recommended!

Ortofons, etc may look nice but theres simply no substance to their looks!

I've been using these since 2001 and have never looked back... 8)

Ortofons not only eat your dubplates but they eat your vinyls too!

surely if ortofons are eating your vinyl its because the weight is slightly too high? im probably wrong but i setup my turntables with the lowest weight possible before it ever skips just so that it isn't eating the plate so much

ive been using them for 6 months, havent particularly noticed any degradation and ive tried comparing old plates with brand new plates

just my couple o' pence, please prove me wrong

Sure brand SC35C or better, -The work horse of the industry

They have a few different models, some better for tracking, some better for audio quality, and some made for balance.
