Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
I must say though, all these people getting high and mighty about never having used cracked software, or being "ashamed", I think that's a bit silly. Honestly, the majority of us have used it at some point, and I know I would DEFINITELY not be making electronic music without it.
So while I understand for the purposes of this site we should probably not discuss how to make cracked software work etc, to pretend that it is the bogey-man that is destroying everything is nonsense. It's the internet age ffs.

I'm not making that point, but I can assure you that pirating does seriously hurt companies trying to do this. Not into a debate about it, there are positives, and yes times are changing, but I can guarantee you it seriously hurts.
Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE

I can see what you are saying, but it's hard to say how much it hurts them because that is offset to an extent by pirated software acting as a "try before you buy" product. I used to use pirate FL Studio until I decided that I had been using the product so long that I should pay for it (and so as to get all the updates etc without trouble), and I'm sure quite a lot of people on here have used pirated software before finally purchasing it. I think it's in the interests of software companies to take this into account, and possibly use it to their advantage. I think FL Studio does this reasonably well with its many free updates after the initial purchase (though there was talk on the site about possibly moving on from this format - but who knows?)
A vote thread could be interesting. "If you use legal DAW, did you use a pirated version of that same DAW before purchasing a legal version?"

A friend of mine bought the original FruityLoops, when it was just basically a drum machine, waaaaay back. He's been getting free upgrades ever since.
Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
If you want to use cracked software, that's your decision and you'll have to deal with the consequences. But once you start discussing it here, DSF has to regulate or deal with the consequences.
It's a matter of respect.

Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
I did that bra, $99 in '99 chea! free ever since, and I'm not gunna lie, it kind of ruins all other software for you, like, I've already paid for this, why would I upgrade...wub wrote:grooki wrote: I think FL Studio does this reasonably well with its many free updates after the initial purchase

Grooki - just think about young companies though, companies that want to be disruptive in the marketplace, companies that want to do new (interesting) risky things, rather than turning out the same old shit or analog recreations, those companies can't even get started if the name of their software is going to yield a crack as the first result in google. That is a reality. Some people do it for the love, and fucking hells of cheers to them, but its pretty dubious how long they stick around.
Kind of getting into a debate here, and that is not my intent. I just want to make you aware of that. I'm not trying to discourage piracy, or anything like that. But I'm seeing that reality, and I feel like we really could use some innovators here in digital music making, and I don't see them arriving.

Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
I have an issue with guys like Cuckos or similar small companies having their software pirated.
Reaper is free to use with just a nag screen.
But yet it is pirated.

Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
i've said it before, i admit i use pirated software. i'm still at the stage when i haven't really worked out what plugins i need, and which i can delete. i've tried reason, fl studio, cubase and ableton and i find that cubase works best for me. so i suppose i should buy a copy, however i'll need to have a dongle stuck in my machine which i disagree with. this goes for a few software packages, i don't believe that the customer should have to put up with these over zealous copy protection schemes.
Anyhow, i will eventually buy some software. But the way i see it is that i'm not harming anyone by using the software at the moment. Software is not a consumable item like a piece of food - i.e you eat it, its gone.
Now i do agree with what people are saying on here, that if you buy something you value it more. I think its because of the limitation. If you only had one synth, you'd read the manual cover to cover a couple of times, try every preset, every waveform etc. Know it inside and out. Whereas if you just download every latest and greatest synth, you just won't have the time to learn them all well, and never know any of their full potential. Limitation can be a good thing.
My opinion is that using cracked software is ok if you can't afford to buy it, or if you disagree with that companies protection policy. My friend lost his dongle for logic and had to pay about £60 for a replacement, i don't agree with this at all. These companies should realise they can't stop piracy and they're just wasting money on trying to do so and annoying loyal customers. When i used to play games on my pc, i'd always have to download a no cd crack, as i didn't like to have to carry the cd with me.
If you're using the software regularly and making money from it, then you really should think about buying it tho. You'll get the support and updates too, i know cubase 5 is at 5.5 now, but i'm stuck with 5.1.2 i think, which has known bugs that 5.5 addresses. So there are definite disadvantages to piracy. Almost everyone knows about the massive bug, use it for a while and it'll start crashing. But if you do pirate the stuff, don't go posting on here expecting tech support, as the forum's policy is clear. Its a production forum, not a torrent site.

Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
Buy software for the convenience.
I bought FL on cd, and lost my disk a few years back. Called image line, was promptly put on hold for 20 minutes before being asked my shipping details. Didnt really ask questions... 3 days later, UPS kicked a package off at my door, they had express mailed me a copy of fl5 (what I originally bought) and an upgrade code (which you dont normally get upgrades with fl on cd)
Stick that in your USB dongle-cd-arguement... While your downloading no-cd cracks, Im getting swift service from a good company...
And youll notice, rapidshare, doesnt have nifty europop music scattered throughout like image lines hq does.

Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
lol there is no argument. your point is moot, seeing as it takes a couple of hours to torrent cubase and its done, vs 20 mins on hold(which is another thing i hate), and 3 days delivery. if you're going to argue, at least make a valid point.Teknicyde wrote:Buy software for the convenience.

Europop has nothing to do with anything, thou shalt not question thy europop.
Re: CRACKED SOFTWARE
None of the torrents for Cubase work, As much as you think they will, they are full of bugs and that no dongle crack will play up after a few months. I tried whilst getting into music production and then just brought Cubase 4 at educational price as the amount of crashes was stupid. Cracked software never works how it should.
