yeahh i started noticing mine this summer, no idea when it really started but it definitely sucks. is there anything you guys do to protect yourself from further damage when you're producing?

Re: Protect your ears!!!
monitor at reasonable levels
there's no need to blast your monitors/headphones when producing

Re: Protect your ears!!!
yeah, most definitely. i just find that sometimes when trying to isolate frequencies to cut/boost when eq'ing stuff or when making a patch, you can find yourself hit with some pretty harsh stuff, even at low levels...just gotta be more careful i suppose.deadly habit wrote:monitor at reasonable levels

Re: Protect your ears!!!
it could be something in your house, my TV makes a a horrible loud ringing sound sometimes when its not even on and other household appliances can give out these high frequencies so its hard to tell, but yes Tinnitus is constant I believe o_OJacob15728 wrote:I have ringing in my ears sometimes. I notice it maybe a few times a week but it's usually mild. It"s only particularly loud and annoying for an average of maybe 5 minutes a week or so? That's not tinnitus since it's not constant, right? I never really thought much of it or worried about it.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
Problem with tinnitus is that most people start caring about when it's too late.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
well that makes sense considering they don`t hear the ringing until they hear it.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
Yeah that's like lung cancer, I won't believe in it until it shows up

I thought I had the same thing but I cleaned my ear and I went through maybe 5 Q-tips+.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
Sorry to hear that mate. I'd be taking a good 3-6 months away from anything loud, period. No production, no band work, no clubs - don't even stand next to traffic or trains unless you have to. You should see -some- improvement, but tinnitus is generally there for life.Johnst wrote:Hey DSF,
for the past couple of months i've started to slowly develop worse and worse tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears). I went to an audiologist and it looks like i've got permanent hearing damage to my left ear, despite immediately wearing earplugs to shows and decreasing the amount of time i've spent producing once i noticed any ringing at all.
now even when i wear ear plugs my ear starts ringing worse when i jam with my band, and it looks like i might be fucked, if not forever then at least for awhile.
Please please PLEASE be careful guys, and protect your most valuable and easily damaged asset as a musician. wear ear plugs, take constant breaks, and, unless you're eqing or building a sound, keep the volume low when you produce. you'll thank yourself later.
much love DSF, you've taught me almost everything i know about production, so hopefully this will cause some of you to make some changes that could have lifelong benefits.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
It could possibly be to how your brain is interpreting the frequencies. Sound has a huge impact on our balance (which is why people who go deaf have to learn how to walk again).Chris mack wrote:I have some weird condition that when I am exposed to loud noise I get dizzy, stay dizzy for weeks.... Re: Protect your ears!!!
Information is key. A film called It's All Gone Pete Tong woke me up. Started wearing ear plugs.Electric_Head wrote:well that makes sense considering they don`t hear the ringing until they hear it.

Re: Protect your ears!!!
Does anybody else think there would be a market for earplugs that were extremely discreet and almost non visible to the naked eye? I think one of the large stigmas around not wearing ear protection is that some people think it makes you look silly... I think this needs to be adressed.
