Slow Production

Hey everyone

just something that occurred to me when i read production threads:

I have seen loads of people saying they have like 4 or 5 projects on the go that need finishing, starting tracks here there and everywhere and always seem to be throwing out constant WIPs and finished tracks

am i the only one that has maybe 1 or 2 (at very most) songs on the go at once? i maybe finish one track a month if im lucky! and can only seem to work on one at a time... yeah i start loads of projects but they just stay as loops

am i the odd one out here? does everyone else here have such a hyperactive production routine?

im not all that bothered tbh, im just here to have fun, just curious

yea i have about 5 projects going plus about 30 loops that probably wont see it past that stage,
in a year i've finished one track... need to sort it out really

I'm extremely slow, lucky if I'll get one or two songs done a year. I know that's probably the extreme, but hey, you're not alone.

i finish a track probably every 1-2 months. i usually get the bulk of a track done in 2 weeks or so but then sit on it for a while and slowly add things. i do have a few other projects that i start and stuff but usually its just messing around or getting a random idea and never go with it. at most id probably be working on 3 projects with some ditched efforts in the process. but dont finish too much.

some people say they start a song first with the drums and then go right into the main drop. i cant do that. i first have to get an idea of what type of song i want to make whether it be vibey, broey, dark, etc. i then get the drums accordingly and then work on some pads and sound fx. i find it necessary to create atmosphere in the track before i start my main drop because it gives me inspiration and a sense of how i should make the drop. just figured id share what helps me actually complete projects instead of just making a loop then not touching it.

but yeah man im with ya. i should spend more time in my daw for practice but its weird because i actually get better at producing without even touching my daw. simply by reading and researching.

I usually have like 10 things on the go, and eventually something gets released its hectic my music folder is full to the brink of un-finished tunes lol

most of the time it's just me messing with stuff trying to learn more and getting better at general mixdowns and stuff, not really trying to make a song. But when an idea hits me and I really like it and think that people will like it, I go for it and it comes really easy and smoothly. I generally get the composition down in like 2 weeks, and then spend about 2 more weeks mixing down and stuff.

I write and mix very quickly, as a result I never have anything on the go. My aim one of these days is to take my time with a song and see what happens.

I have a ton of things that I start and never finish, but for the most part I'm only working on one thing at a time. I have completion issues, I can't move onto a new project if I don't finish the one before it

I usually make alot of projects and never do anything with them just to learn things,and then have 1-2 projects that I actually aim to to complete. The project im working on currently has been in progress for a bit over a week and im hopeing to have it done and polished up within two more weeks but i wont rush it if i don't like it yet.

I like to finish at least a track a month...It's like a practice of mine now! The more and more I do it the easier it gets! Just take your time man, but don't get into the bad habit of babying one track!

I dont think Ive ever speant more then 48 hours on anything ever... Though, there is this one project, I open up like once a week and mess with... It will be my masterpiece, when I finish it in 30 years.

I think thats what it is, i have one project im propper into and dont want to work on anything else! tweaking EQ's a couple of Hz and the levels a little here and there.

Yeah man I would just take some time off from that song or maybe just try and work through it...
That's where I was with my Where'd you go remix...(the song is in my soundcloud, but it's kind of embarrassing since it's pure shite)
But I felt like I needed to finish it to work on newer stuff(well at the time anyway)
Just push through it or work on another track!

Ps. those 4 bar loops can come in handy one day! It's always good to have a library of original samples laying around

i usually bust out a song, in 6-24 hrs. Any more then that im bored with it and fuck it up, if im really diggin it after i finished it ill go back and do the VIP within the same time wise.

i used to bang em out in about 2 hours, now i normally take about 7 or 8 with another session a couple of days later which usually changes the tune completely

I have too many WIPs on the go! Normally bang out the majority of the tune in maybe 4 or 5 hours and then start to make something else..

It's all because I like to produce any and every style of electronic music so I get bored and move on!

edit: Actually, that's wrong - I get EXCITED and move on.. I'll get some inspiration that'll come from something that I can't apply to the previous style I was doing

I feel like most producers have tons and tons of have baked tracks and ideas lying around. Every once in awhile I'll comb through em and see if something can be re-worked and made into a finished product, but that's maybe like 1/5th of the time.

Usually I know within like, an hour of starting a particular track whether or not i'll be able to finish it.

As for actual output, mine ebbs and flows. There's been periods of time where i've produced like 3 tracks in 5 days, other times, like right now, I haven't finished anything in like 2 months.
