Post by Codox » Wed Aug 17, 2011 9:31 pm

Does anyone have any tribal drum samples they'd like to share, such as any taiko drum samples or anything like that, or do you guys know any good sites to find tribal drum samples cause i haven't came across any.

Get yourself down your nearest large commercial music retailer - HMV if you're in the UK, not sure about anywhere else in the world. Big store, will sell DVDs, Blu Ray & CDs. They'll have a 'World Music' section. Find the cheapest African percussion themed CD you can. HMV in the UK regularly do random compilations of this kind of music for £3-4.

Once you've got the CD, rip it to your computer and drop into an audio editor - Audacity is free and ideal - and chop the shit out of it. Once you've ripped all the loops you want and bounced them as .WAV, saved them etc, get another CD.

Hell, if you're an unscrupulous/cheap SOB, you could buy a CD in the morning, take it home, rip all the samples you want, then take the CD back to the store* and exchange it for another saying you bought it as a present and got the one CD that dear old granny already had, what are the odds??!? Repeat until you have more .WAV loops and samples and noises and sounds and breaks and random fucking chanting than you know what to do with.

And....go 8)

*I actually did this once with Series 3 of the Wire. Bought it on DVD Saturday morning, went home, watched the whole thing in one sitting, then took it back the next day and exchanged it for Series 4. Even joked with the guy in HMV that I'd bought the wrong one as a present, and hey there is no way you can watch an entire series of The Wire in less than 24hrs, right. True story.

Cheesy bongo-laden 60's lounge music compilations are an excellent source of percussion samples also.

haha... i think they should spend some of their money on making a better looking website

i read somewhere that going to an old record store and searching through the world music section can be good for finding really good bongos and other percussion

That's what I do, but to be honest most of the good vinyl is pricey. I got some field recordings of Africa type series from the 80s I think for like 20 each.

East West is pricey but I've gotten a couple over the years and they are top quality samples, way better than loopmasters type stuff, but the prices reflect that.

If you have Kontakt, here are some African instruments in Kontakt format: http://rapidshare.com/files/322255693/Afro_instru.rar
If not you should still be able to get the .wav files from it.
Mostly stringed stuff but some percussive as well.

No problem. I have Sampletank and quite a few expansions, I remember seeing some taiko samples, I'll see what I can get from it if you want.

The taiko samples weren't the best, and very quiet, I put a light limiter on the taiko only (sampletank's internal limiter).
There's some miscellaneous dry African percussion sounds as well after the taikos.
For reference, the taiko notes were: G B D F G A C D E F G A C

here are some freebie tribal drums i use...

Independence Free comes with a small but great sounding set of african/world drum instruments. it's a 1GB download though, but it also has some nice organs, pianos - worth a download.
Proteus VX is an old 90s sound module. features heaps of percussion sets, most of them come with congas, marimbas, etc. and it's a perfect source of classic 90s sounds, i'm a sucker for those.
Plugsound Free is an old rompler plugin, comes with a nice set of tribal drums.
here are some free balafon samples for Kontakt and Live - it's an African percussion instrument.

if you need loops, here's a set of free african percussion loops i've found today.

the best african drums sample set i've ever heard http://www.sonivoxmi.com/ProductDetail. ... ricanDrums

just an incredible amount of care and attention went into making that sample pack and it shines through, the articulations of each instrument are beautiful.
