For instance, a skateboarder I know said my music is boring and next time I was with him - he did a perfect treyflip; he looked all smug - I told him it looked terrible and he should give up.

If people whip the smile off your face, do the same thing to them haha!

i do this too. but for some reason when i make "brostepish" type music i get tired of it and want to make another "brostep" tune after a week or earlier. but when i make a chilled out pure vibes kind of track i listen to it all the time but i only make those kind of tunes when im really feeling it and got the perfect melody Imo of a perfect melody is something emotional and calm and just gives you good feelings/goosebumps i guess. got 2 chilled out stuff in the works but don't know if i want to finish them

I've been thinking about this and I came up with this idea that music's meaning is in the listener, so maybe I don't adore my own stuff like I do other people's stuff just because I can't pin an artificial meaning on it. Idk. Just me thinking out loud.
In short, yes. You're being self-conscious. But this doesn't have to be a bad thing, you can find a balance between this and being egotistical (AKA confidence), and I find that is how I remain teachable and learn the most. Like, If people say they love your music, that's fucking awesome, so take the compliment, but don't start thinking you're the best producer ever, and don't hesitate to ask for constructive criticism. I've gathered you don't seem to have a problem with any of those things, so keep doing what you're doing.

I prefer to make my music for myself, but I also try to take into consideration what people want to hear. If someone really likes my music, I take it as an inspiration as to how I can improve upon it, but also when someone is just not feeling a song at all. Both are great inspiration.

As far as your song goes, yeah man, it's hella short. Just work on it a little bit more and make it longer/more complete, and then don't be afraid to blast it. IMO music always sounds better louder. If they don't like it, cool. Keep working on it. If they do, awesome - a dash of confidence to inspire you and improve the song with the same general concept, rather than making drastic changes.

Listen up because this is important:

As far as meaning, sometimes it's more subconscious. Especially with instrumental music. I prefer instrumental because it creates emotions that cannot be put into words, and some might interpret it differently than others. Just because you didn't purposefully create it to portray a certain emotion doesn't mean it's not there. If humans did not have emotions, I might go as far as to say we wouldn't have music or art. It's emotional by default. Keep it up man. You spend tons of time on this forum because you want to make good music right. You're living for the music. When you're spending time on this shit, that's your heart and soul, man. No one can tell you otherwise.

EDIT:
BTW I'm liking it, by the way, super chilled out track, great vibe, and nice melodies. Needs some work, but that's a redundant statement because it's 20 seconds long. Reminds me of a point in my life i can't pinpoint..HMMMMM.... :?

It's because your music is crap. I mean that in the nicest possible way, as well.

Until we get to a comfortable stage where we're really proud of our music (and have some humility) - we'll be self-conscious of our music.

I would say that i'm proud as to where i am at the moment, and without sounding big headed i like the music i produce just as much as some producers which i have looked up to.
But i still HATE playing my music infront of friends and family, so i only every produce when i'm home alone.
I was at a house party the other week, and they asked to hear my music, but i refused to put it on. Got no idea why, maybe it's because i know they're not into the more chilled out side.
I also struggle to mix my own music into other tracks when DJ'ing, they're DJ friendly (standard 16-32 bar intros etcetc) but i have no idea why i can't do it, frustrates me.

So don't worry, you're not the only one out there with problems!

Oh and that clip sounds good man, nice melodies. Keep at it!

Its a range of things, one is that whilst producing a track you have to listen to it constantly and imagine your favourite tune in the whole world right now, if you played that constantly you'd soon be bored and chances are your track isn't going to be up to them standards so you'll get bored easier and begin to pick up on things you don't like.. it happens to me I hate some of my own tracks but they seem to go down well with other people and for the 'standing up' against other track thing, its probably a mastering thing , my tracks sound so flat and empty compared to professionally mastered tracks especially the drums.. plus its a matter of getting to a stage where you can make a brilliant track basically all the 'big' producers have been around for years even decades so imagine the amount of time it takes to get to that level.

exactly. datsik has been producing for a few years at least before he emerged into the scene so he had some experience under his belt. and i think i remember reading that he made his signature roar before he did dubstep as well, but just didn't perfect it. he was also producing with excision and downlink so having multiple people share techniques also helps yourself in the long run. also spor was making dnb for awhile before he did dubstep under feed me. so it was pretty easy for him to transfer his techniques. and another example is skrillex. even though he's not well liked here i've heard some of his older stuff like when he was "djing" or whatever for the emo band and early skrillex stuff and his roar bass sounded nothing like it does today. it just goes to show you what a little help production wise could do. now he's one of the top producers touring the world. and all of this happened last year.

i know i said in my post before i always blast my music, but i was pretty self conscious as well at first. i would show a song to my friends and be pretty nervous on how they would react to it. now though i'm starting to make some pretty professional quality tracks so i only use listening to big name producers as inspiration that i need to get better asap so i can join the ranks among them.

It's tough because music is the most subjective thing in the world and something alot of people have strong personal and emotional connections with.
Some people think they know everything bout music, truth is they are just an X Factor fan and know everything about pop for the last 5 years. Of course me and you would challenge that and question whether or not that is even music at all.... other people would question even whether dubstep is music at all... who fukken cares.

Bottom line, fuck what anyone else thinks, make what YOU feel and what YOU like, play it as loud as you like and have fun doing it. If anyone else likes it, it's a bonus :)

expecting anyone else to care about what you did to create a tune is expecting snow to fall in Hades.

that's what i kept finding out until i woke up and stopped trying to get anyone to understand. :i:

i play my shit 24/7. dont give a fuck, whats the point about being self conscious about it? you made it, be proud of where your at right now. always look at it like that. still cant do it? listen to a track you made when you first started and one you made last night. that will give you a confidence boost.

im sorry im not reading all the posts but i did notice someone say they didnt play their own mediocre music but they'd play someone elses mediocre music because they dont like what theyre making.

IF youre not enjoying the process or the final product you need to stop. Make something you enjoy.

I love listening to my music! Why would I make it if I didn't like it?
On the topic of people saying silly things: I sent a song of mine to a friend and she said it needed a bigger bass.It sounded fine to me so I asked what she was listening on and she said "laptop speakers" :P I tried to explain to her that it was her speakers that were cutting the bass, but I don't think she ever got it :s
