Kromestar - Sub Meditation EP pressing problems?

from pressing records before in my experience, i think the pressing plant owes the label something here!

My 'Here We Come' on Southside Dub Stars skips right on the drop (ouch). Sad really.

I imagine my sub-meditation will be the same (crackly and so on) , I'll check it when it comes.

Same here. Sensi Dub also had a crackly intro. I ripped them both to WAV then cleaned up the audio removed the crackles and the random pops. At least I got them clean on CD and when I play out loud sometimes it don't matter. Still a bummer though.

i have the dubstars 12" and the sub meditation ep on tp and they both sound wicked.

My Coki redeye TP is mega quiet too, I have to turn the trim up loads, but it means the hum is too loud. Very annoying....

I cannot comment on any of the other 12`s that people have complained about previously but as i did cut this let me explain.......

Once you put more than 6.5 minutes on a 12" side something has to give. I cut this 12" at +3dbvu which is not mega quiet ,If anything you have probably been spoilt with some of those heavyweight cuts that have been cut in the past.What you have to remember is the level of a cut is always program dependant (so a 12" with 4 tracks on it is not going to be cut as loud as a 12" with two 5min tracks)anyone who tells you otherwise is missinformed.
Also if your turntable is humming after a 3-4db boost you need to isolate them and check the earth because that is not right.

I didn't think the Coki EP was any quieter than I'd expect for a 4-tracker. Sounds like a typical Transition cut to me, and easily loud enough to play out - I've already played it out 4 or 5 times with no issues whatsoever.

the Burial 2LP is a nice HEAVY slab of wax, and it sounds real good, too.
so big up to whoever pressed it.

In my experience of getting records pressed (7 so far) the crackle is usually there on all records - you only notice it if the sound of the track isn't loud enought to mask it - a quiet bit/intro/breakdown.

Stop the record on the deck at the crackley bit and then examine that area in the light holding it at an angle - can you see a patch of white dots in the grooves?

That is (allegedly) called non fill and is caused by a change in temperature when records are being pressed - don't ask me what it is but from what I have seen it's on a hell of a lot of record and is only a problem when the cut is mega-quiet or if it's all over a breakdown.

There's nothing you can do to remove it and I think that most factories have a policy of repressing a record if it's ALL OVER it - if it's a few bits then they won't do anything - and that's if the label even noticed/said anything.

I haven't seen the Kromestar track - just talking from my own experience/agony from pressing up records in the past!

Quality Control

1. No paper-dust, fibers or vinyl hairs on the pressings.

2. A clean cut centre-hole.

3. No “non-fill” (In the record-press, the vinyl flows from the center to the outside, sometimes leaving gas-voids on the far side of the stamper-ridges, which are the out-board groove-wall. This is called Non-fill and causes distortion in the right channel in the finished pressing).

4. Minimal “orange-peel” (a wavy surface, like the skin of an orange. This is from the surface of the press-die face, which the back of the stamper is up against when pressing. Orange-peel can cause a roaring sound).

5. Flat pressings with no “dishing” (like a salad-bowl).

6. No disturbing lacquer noise.

Looks like the white stuff is number 1 not 3
