Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
Since there is a lot of threads about mastering; this seems relevant!
High Dynamics vs loudness - you decide!
Personally; I go for dynamics, I ask my ME's to not push to hard and keep some of the natural flavour whats in the track - even if I am quiet on someones Ipod I don't care; Dubstep is made for a club anyways!

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
Honestly, neither.
I'd prefer to just produce something that was interesting.

Same sentiments as gnome and wub
Couldn't give a shit as long as it sounds interesting to me and is loud enough for me to hear and sounds good in the club
*EDIT* Holy crap i've just seen how many threads on the front page are about mastering, WTF!?!? people on DSF are weird lol

I wouldn`t go that far.legend4ry wrote:Dubstep is made for a club anyways!
It`s great in clubs but for me it`s a must that it sounds good through my headphones.
I do a lot of eyes down listening.
So it`s a bit of both for me

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
So you guys have 0 preference on how you want your music to sound when it goes to mastering?
Thats kinda, weird..I am the pickiest mo-effer when it comes to how I want things to sound when I get them back.

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
I want my music to sound interesting and give off the right vibes. If i'm happy with my tune then i send it to mastering. If i'm not then I don't send it, pretty simple really haha! What i'm saying is i'm not producing with loudness or dynamics in mind. I think dynamics is something that sort of comes naturally really, as you build the tune.legend4ry wrote:So you guys have 0 preference on how you want your music to sound when it goes to mastering?

Everyone has their different ways of doing things i suppose
Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
Its a bit weird with me honestly... Im sort of a audiophile so I really like playing around with extreme compression, wild sidechain routing... It leads to my tracks being loud by default / out of preference I guess, but not without interesting dynamic happenings between instruments...
Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
I'm for neither, you want a good balance don't you?
Having said that anything with an RMS of less that 10dbs is pretty criminal but still, this is dance music.

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
I'm definitely anti-loudness wars, but these days you have to find a middle ground I think. You don't want people reaching for the volume when your song comes on, but you don't want it smashed so hard that the dynamics are lost.
Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
well i cant make my tunes loud so i have to go for dynamics

I'd prefer to just produce something that was interesting.dynamic variation is something i always try to utalise to keep my tracks sounding interesting.
Is that mixing?
Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
lol yeah
also not only is it for the club, but i reckon it's made to spin more than one beat simultaneously, which can beef up the overall output signal and tbh making it pretty irrelevant how loud you can push your squashed ass mix at the end of the day.
Now, i voted dynamics, bc i miss being able to feel the space from reverbs and the knock of drum hits standing out, when a mix is flatlined that stuff turns to shit.
But there is a lot to be said for the skill in building a mix that sounds good when you produce a commercially loud master
Thats a whole talent in itself, knowing where there's room to do what and how it will make your track really bang.

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
Depends what im making, for dubstep/techno/ambient yes dynamics are good!
But for noise, stuff i want to burn peoples ears with no dynamics suck

Re: Who REALLY cares about the loudness war?
Never had a situation in studio or in a club where loudness became a problem.
Can always retain the dynamic and just boost the volume rather than have unwanted compression during composition that makes it a pure square.
