Something I've noticed about Dungeon...

Post by wub » Wed Aug 24, 2011 2:36 pm

...is that so many of the tunes appear to be over saturated.

Take for example page 4 of this thread. Barely halfway full and already J:Kenzo - Protected features 4 seperate times. Not saying it's not a good track, but it's being featured so much. Same for DJ Madd & Phaleh - Ritual. Features 3 times on that page. Again, not a bad track, it's just that the more 'dungeon' themed mixes I see, the more similarities I notice in the tracklistings.

If Dungeon is such a big sound right now, why aren't the DJ mixes reflecting the variations, as opposed to all including the same tracks/producers?

(Not slating any one particular mix/DJ/track/producer btw)

spam post :)

people need to look further than the producers that are regarded as "dungeon", there are heaps out there making good music, Dj's need to work harder at tracking it down

This is my point; I disregard a lot of the DJ mixes that get posted on DSF and elsewhere just by looking at the tracklistings. If it's mainly DJ Madd tracks or whatever, then it's not going to interest me as I've heard it before. good tracks, granted. But nothing I haven't/spun a hundred times before.

i think people get too bogged down in the whole 'dungeon' thing... they're just dark tunes really, nothing new about that

also that its (mostly) boring and has been done before... dont really bother listening to youngstas sets anymore, which is a shame

id like dubstep to throw something new up, maybe then it'll reclaim the name from tear out, but everything new or refreshing seems to be happening under 140

All the Dubstep sub genre names are joke. Dungeon. Purple. Bro. Sounds like bunch of retarded Teletubbies.

Those tunes specifically are very rarely heard around here, I live in a city of almost 2 million people and there are only 2 other guys in town that play anything decent.

I personally like to keep my selection as fresh as possible so usually after I include a track in a mix I stop playing it out.

I agree some tracklists are samey samey from people on here, but considering that my local area is wrought with 19 year olds playing nothing but the gashest bro on joysticks and controllers I take good tunes live on a system whenever I can get them, even if I consider them rinsed out.

Teledubbies? Teletub in its purest form? Oh god, this place makes me want to die sometimes.

Does the phrase 'dungeon' ever get used in regards to dubstep outside of this forum? I'm assuming no. It makes sense in that people know you're talking about KM/Youngsta etc. I suppose, but yeah most of it's pretty dull. Even Kryptic Minds have got to the point where they're just using the same kits, synth sounds and atmospheres etc. Just making the same tracks over and over.

Proves the point that once you name a genre, it's already over.

I have to agree with Wub here. As much as I love the sound I gave up on the Dungeon thread after page 8.
The sound is very autumn/winter for me so I don't tend to listen to much of it this time of year. Having said that, if something gets released that i've been waiting for, i'll buy it.

The name grates ever so slightly, but only because it makes me think of

Exactly. And they lose their power when they are surrounded by so much of the same. One dimensional dj sets are soooooo tedious!

^^^^ That's the problem.

It's like there's so many people who seem to act like Dungeon is the new thing in dubstep and it's the only thing that's acceptable to play and that gets boring.

I'd class myself as being a DJ who plays this sound and if I get booked that's something you can count on hearing. but I would never just play it for a whole set. Yeah I'll play a lot of it but I'll be also playing loads of stuff on a wonked out wobbly style along the lines of Coki. I'll play both old school and new grime instrumentals and I'll veer of into some more 4/4 technoey stuff or some more hip hoppish kind of tracks along the lines of Rustie if I can.

I also have issue with some Dungeon stuff sounding a little to clinical.

I'm honestly not that much of a Kryptic Minds fan for this reason. It's not got enough groove and it sounds a little too clean all the time and a little flat. I dunno. That's just my taste though

dungeon just sounds like people trying to copy Distance's early work... don't even know why it's suddenly a new thing.
