Naming your songs

Post by OllieScott » Wed Aug 24, 2011 7:34 pm

Something that always takes me a while is naming a song. Becomes easier if there's a vocal sample in there, because unusually I can just name it after that. But when the song is just instrumental, I can never think a interesting name for it.

Anyone got any tips for this?

I have an iPhone so there's that little notepad app, and when I feel inspired or hear someone say something semi-intelligent I like to type it down for future reference :)

I cant usually think of something pretty quickly, it just takes a second to examine my day and sum up the day with a few words.

But sometimes i dont want a track title to mean anything or have words, so i just smash the keyboard.

This here track in my sig was name in a spur of the moment type thing.

I first off decided to call i kaleidoscope. But I couldn't spell it so i googled my interpretation of it. So it comes up saying 'did you mean...' and a phonetic spelling of it. The phonetic spelling looked cool so I just took that and tada!

normally the first thing that pops into my head, i've given up spending ages trying to think of names. You get used to bad names after a while and then they don't seem bad haha

I just think of random shit. For example, my tunes are named: Mello Yello, Rawr, NDT, and Sidechain Everything

It's usually just something random I pick before I upload it

i only properly name tunes when theyre good enough to render out of reason, all my project files are called afdkb;akb or something which is a bugger if i want to work on them again

i'll usually name it after something which goes with the feeling of the track ugetme, what it reminds me of or what i was thinking abou when i did it

Works in progress usually have the first word that comes to mind, or whatever subject was relevant for that day.
I get a lot of names and words from books though. Whenever I'm reading books I usually highlight stuff in the book either because I want to look into the subject later or really like the word/phrase.

Best tip I can give on this though is avoid at all costs naming tunes stuff like wanki10293iu, blah2uh2ub3 etc.
You'll never find them again when you want to! haha. I've lost a lot of stuff like that when I used to do it.

I name by date mostly like 021911 so i can also tell when I made it, but when I put em on SC I change the name to what fits the song which can create confusion so I keep my original wav in my possession named TheHunt021922 so i can remember what session it came from. All of my TV score tracks are named TVmusic 1, 2, 3, etc... if I show them to people or email then its called TVM1 ...etc...

Not that I ALWAYS work this way...but about half the time I will just be letting my mind wander and think of a phrase or a word or whatever and think..."huh...that'd be an awesome name for a tune" then musical ideas for the tune will start going off (I ought to take notes on these, but usually don't)...then I go make the tune that fits that title ASAP after I think this all up...I'm the only one that does this?
