Skrillex Growl in FM8 (Got A Rough Sound)

Yesterday, I bought FM8, as I heard good things about it, and also that it is capable of making monster bass sounds, such the Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites growl bass. Although I don't want to be copying styles, I did have a look at getting some nasty growl basses, and at first I thought it would be impossible- all I was getting was bell and pad sounds, but after a lot of fiddling around, I managed to get a pretty nice growl bass sound, in the clip below, I have a series of clips, of different tones of the bass. And PLEASE take note that this is the unprocessed, unresampled, un distorted sound, just the raw sample from FM8, and I think if I actually tweaked it for longer I could get an even closer sound, and also bear in mind, that I do not plan to use these in my tracks, I just was curious as to how Skrillex made them in FM8, and decided to try! Let me know what you think, and if you want a tutorial or something, since there is literally nothing on YouTube apart from a basic wobble. It is still WAY off the actual sound, but this is what I got so far!

Nice man! This sounds really good. I've been trying to figure out how to make soounds like that. But as you said, FM8 tutorials don't go very far on youtube :/ haha. You should totally make a tutorial for it! That would be greatly appreciated. I barely even know wut buttons i'm pushing in FM8, let alone trying to come up with sounds like this. I say a tutorial is a great idea

Thanks guys! It is still a really rough sound, I'll try to get it sounding clearer, then make a tutorial! I do think FM8 is a really overlooked synth, it can make some really powerful stuff.

I agree. I almost don't want to touch massive again because the sounds you can make in FM8 just have so much depth. get to work on that tutorial!

Pretty awsm man, a nice text tutorial would be good. I'm still trying to get to rips with FM8 too and the few tutorials that are on youtube mostly suck, like that one about creating a wobble.

It's not so much the patch as it is automating an EQ to MAKE it "growl" by creating vowel formants. It was all discussed in the thread about Skrillex revealing how he makes his basses, it's still in the first two pages I think. But yes, Noisestorm, that is a very good example and it sounds pretty nice.

btw Noise, grats on getting a track released under Monstercat. they're one of the few labels I follow and you debuted with a solid track.

I hate those sounds so much, but it is very Skrillex-esque. And all that was done with one day of prior synthesis knowledge, experimentation, and tweaking shit? Very nice work.

I actually haven't automated any EQ's to make this patch, it's just raw FM8, mabye I could try to automate them and get an even closer sound?

throw some harsher waveforms in there to give them more vowel noise, like a triangle on the dominant operator, or squaew or sawtooth.
