Like Mr. Nice, where to start... just got home after flying back from London, driving back the 3 hours from Houston to San Antonio, driving straight to school, teaching the children all about New Media/Digital Arts, until 6 this evening.

I've been dying to check the reports and Yes, it was as huge as everyone says it is. At one point I was standing up stairs and I felt my bottom lip moving and trembling because the bass was that thick, that heavy, muddy, and powerful. Skream's set was ridiculous, Yunx killed it, and JoeNice proved as always he is a proper gentleman on the decks. Joe Nice is 5.

Huge ups to everyone who treated my brother and I like family: JoeNice, Seckle, Dave Q, Mala, Sgt. Pokes, Loefah, Coki,Yunx, Task,Kode 9, Paul Rose, and Plasticman (dashing green track suit by the way). You guys made our trip totally worth it. Can't wait till the next time we can return the favor here in Texas. Big up to all the Dubsteppers!

I'm not 100% sure where to start on this one, the whole experience has left I deep in thought for days now. I'm not sure what to say but I'll say what comes to mind.

I thought before hand the event might be busy due to the January DMZ and the e-mails I'd been recieving from people all over the globe asking for membership because they were looking forward to the event... but I never expected the number that turned up on saturday. I think by about 10.45 - 11pm the manager said to me "Mala the room is already full and you have hundreds outside we cant let no more people in".... I went and had a look outside and I was shocked. I saw my close friends, dj's, producers, everyone there in the cold and i thought shit. simply!! Its now about 11.30 or so and the manager said to myself, Loefah and Coki "look the mass upstairs is free tonight you could move the party upstairs? " We checked the room upstairs, the sound system was big but wasn't eq'ed for what we do... the lights were not our vibe nor were the projections, neither was having the decks away from where I wanted to be most and that is amongst you, right in the dance on the same level so i can feel, see and hear whats going on. Why any dj would want to play all the way up there is beyond me... It made I feel uncomfortable if truth be told. A decision had to be made.... having recieved all those e-mails I just thought of the people that had travelled far to get to DMZ and thought about locking the doors and turning those outside away!! Nah!! we had no choice but to take the party upstairs even though we didn't have time to properly set up!

I'd like to say thank you to everyone..... Thanks to everyone over the year that has travelled from all over and put their hand in their pockets to help this shit grow... Thanks to everyone that shouted out "stop the track" when they heard a beat that sent them nutz, everyone that jumped up, skanked hard and got on a deep meditation, to everyone that pushed out a positive vibe inside DMZ, everyone that had the guts to step to the decks when your not even playing (or not even a dj in some cases) but you reloaded the track same way... these things are what makes DMZ for me. To every souljah thats played and tore down our nights. To the heads coming through buying records, to those dj's at home getting tight mixes up on the net... to producers sending me some heavy music from all over the place and the new producers coming through.. (beats I had on cd last year from some people are coming out now and thats a great thing to see and hear)... words cannot really explain my thanks and how I feel about the love and support I saw on saturday night.. I give thanks to the most high for the wonderful oppotunities and experiences. and I man will keep walkin straight into the whatever future is ahead.

I thought the main problem was that the system wasn't have going to be sound checked and eq'd. But to be honest it really didn't matter that much, everyone was going off. It will be remembered as one of the biggest nights in dubstep. Big up yourself. I can't remember seeing sooo many happy smiling faces in a rave that size before. :D

it was a big big night. Im gutted i had to leave after joe nice's set (a combination of bad flu and catchingt the last toob back to Walthamstow cos i was on me lonesome for the ride home) but im so fukin happy i came down for those 2 hours and got to experience DMZ proper - and by the looks of it, maybe the last 3rd Base one too. Joe's set was dope - hearing all these tunes ive been hearing on the net on a proper system was definitely a moment for me. The last time i heard dubstep on a fat system was 2/3 years ago at PP but fuck me i got a slap on saturday.
Shit was silly. Props to everyone involved and im gonna make sure i get down to the next one for a lot longer.

respect! :n:

For anyone who is interested. I'm the sound engineer at Mass and 3rd Base. Been reading all your comments about the sound and taking it all in.

Glad to hear you all love the sound in 3rd Base! I bet you won't beleive that that rig was designed over 15 years ago (Turbosound TMS4)!!

Thought you all might want an explanation about upstairs. No-one knew that gig was gonna be so busy, thing is it was road block and we had to do something to get all you lovely people inside and out of the cold. A last minuet decission was made and it looks like it was the right one.

That room upstairs is an animal of a space and it is always a lot of hard work. We had no time to get it set up properly or warm up the amps and drivers, as a result it sounded rough to start with. The situation was made no easier by dub step being such a unique, bass heavy sound. These things take time to iron out and belive me we are doing everything in our power to get it sorted. You guys will not have cause to complain in future, I promise.

For those who care, the rig in Mass is Nexo Alpha driven by Crown amps. This is a serious sound system, rated highly by top bods in the industry as one of the best. It is not really designed for our type of usage but it does do a great job when you get it right.

Cheers folks, see you soon.

PS Mick the Manager says he loves you lot, you're wicked.

PPS Regards and respect to Mala, Loafa and Coki from Mick, George, Harry, Barry and Lisa and the rest of the Mass team.

Please feel free to post any responses to our comments.

Massive respect to Mala and Haz for giving us a bit of context and feedback, I'm sure we all really appreciate your comments.

For what its worth I think the right decision was made on Saturday - in fact it was the only decision to make really! Obviously you put a massive amount of effort in as the night progressed to fine tune the sound so thanks for all the effort.

I think I saw the manager on the night - was he the guy in the shirt and tie and artic jacket with a huge smile on his face all night?!

one of the top nights of my life so far
(and i went through many too many / dif. countries, cities, ppl, eras, stimulants, vibes and music).
No doubt the Mass will be perfect for the nxt1

I am curious about the social impact also … how the growing DMZ’s will influence-change the people attending - the dubst_honest human designers.

Thanks for the GREAT night ! -
Mala, Loefah, Coki, Joe, Youngsta, Skream, Kode, Distance, Plast, Orson and Lady Erica
+ many others who I just eye or vibe contacted!

Perhaps it is a bit unfair to jusge Mass as a potential new space when, as you say, with a bit of fore-warning it would have been a different sonic story.
I just didn't like the actual set up, the clubbers surrounding the DJ. All a bit too worship-y for me. Would it be possible to bring the DJs down to every elses level....?

No way, I have never seen the Boss in a tie and I doubt I ever will. However, he did have a massive smile on his face.

The pit is left over from the days of that room being a theater. We have wanted to fill it in for years, eventualy we will but I don't know when. I agree about the DJ booth being so high up, I don't know a single DJ who actualy likes it. It is possible to move the decks onto the stage but it might be easier to use a different room. The DMZ guys have been round to look at all the alternatives, I will leave it to them to let you know what they decide.

Hahaha, I spotted that guy too - on the right hand stairs leaning against the railings, grinning for about 4 hours straight :D

Sorry I didn't get to chat to you more Logos - all got a bit hectic once we moved into Mass. Did you spot Breaker at all? Had a good chat with him while Vex'd were on.

And just in case it ain't clear - you got it completely right, no question about it.

Sure the system and the space weren't perfect, but I felt the same vibe in Mass as I did at the first DMZ a year ago. Both were blinding nights that I will remember for a long time, and having flown from Switzerland just to be there, I would have been gutted to be waiting outside. I know I speak for a lot of other people who feel the same, so full respect and massive thanks to you and the others...
