Skrillex Meets The Symphony - SM&NS Remix (Classical/Rock)
This was an experiment in attempting to take the main melody/theme from Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites by Skrillex and translate it into a more classical feel building up to rock finish. Let me know what you think!!

Hey thanks so much!! Yeah I played all the orchestra instruments with a midi keyboard into Logic Pro 9, I've been trying to get the hang of using the East West Symphony Orchestra software and then at the end I threw some sampled drums and tracked the bass and guitar direct.

Pretty cool man, melody sounds nice on a viloin.

Proper sound dude. Wish you'd bring the snare up just a little. Strings sound great. What are you using?

That is hands down one of the best things I've heard on this forum in a long time. Very well done indeed

This is really nice man. I've been working with a lot of strings in my recent tune but the quality of the samples here is fab.
Which sample pack did you use as I wanna demo it.

Not a sample pack - http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Orchestra

I wanted to not like it because I thought the symphonic part sounded slightly sythetic IMO (no offence) but I actually smiled when the rock dropped in because it sounded great!
Love the lead guitar and drum fills

I was impressed from the start, but I was blow away when the classic rock kicked in.

Wow thanks to everyone for such positive feedback, I wasn't sure what kind of response this would get, you guys are awesome.
- Yeah I agree, it was actually an acoustic guitar arrangement of Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH8hTZ9Y4-4 ) that inspired my humble rendition, the melody sounded so different hearing it played on an acoustic guitar so that got my imagination working.
To make it I used Logic Pro 9 as my DAW, Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 as my audio interface, and Ultrabeat (stock Logic plug in) for the drums (Studio TIght Kit)
...And the orchestra software is East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Plus, here's a link to check it out: http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Orchestra
Thanks again to everyone for the feedback, you guys (and girls maybejustincase?) rock!!

- Wow I couldn't agree more about the snare, this is what happened: I went through the song with my headphones trying to pick out the different melody lines that Sonny layered in the first minute or so of the song, and then once I had the melody down I auditioned different orchestral instruments to see which instrument fit that particular melody. Once I had all the melody lines down and my lineup of instruments picked out I tried to piece it together the best I could and then I though I was finished. So at this point I thought I had my "finished mix" but over the next day or two of listening to it in the car I started to hear the rock vibe take over at the end to punctuate the thing, cause without it after listening to it the overall impression was somewhat limp for lack of a better word. So then I went back to the Logic project and started tracking guitar ideas, followed by bass and finally the drum part which I played on a keyboard. Anyway that's the story of this damn arrangement and here's how it relates to the snare: there was no room for it!! haha the cymbals and the kick found their place easily enough in the extreme highs and lows of the frequency spectrum, but the snare's main frequency ranges were already too crowded, so listening back to the drum part for the first time I could feel the kick in the sub, hear the harmonics of the cymbals jangling annoyingly, and the snare was literally inaudible haha so I was going to start EQing the snare's money frequencies out of the offending instruments but at this point I was worried I'd end up overdoing it and compromising the sound of the symphony samples which was my main focus to begin with. So I ended up just pushing the frequencies of the snare into the gaps that already existed but I knew it wouldn't really cut it cause they were all too high up to give the snare any meat. Wow I'm sorry for the rant, I didn't intend for this to be more than a few lines, but that's why the snare is weak.tenOone wrote:Proper sound dude. Wish you'd bring the snare up just a little. - I'm glad you guys think it's worth showing him!! haha I threw it up in the fan-submitted video section at skrillex.com but if you know of any other way to send it Sonny's way I'd love to give it a shot!!Toric wrote:For sure!Tantric Decks wrote:Make sure you send this to Skrillex man!
- Wow you're definitely too nice, I really appreciate that. For me, my mind is constantly blown on here hearing different the dubstep tracks, every attempt I've made at dubstep production has yet to be what I was trying for, it's such a tedious (but fun) creative process that makes it that much better when it's done really well (For my own taste that's like FeedMe, Bassnectar, Karetus, Daladubz, and obviously Skrillex ha)wub wrote:That is hands down one of the best things I've heard on this forum in a long time. Which sample pack did you use as I wanna demo it.
- Looks like you're already a step ahead of me with the link haha thanks for that, and you're right, it is more than a sample pack because it also includes "play" which is like the virtual instrument you can load into your DAW as a plug-in to control the different instruments via midi controller.wub wrote:Burgeamon wrote: Which sample pack did you use as I wanna demo it.

- I know what you mean about it having that synthetic sound to it, and really I'm sure it's more my fault than the samples, there's examples of some things people have used it to make and it sounds spot on like a live symphony recorded it. The trick is to get good at choosing the most appropriate of the different articulations of whatever instrument you're writing for that is most fitting for the part you're writing. I've heard one of the best ways to develop that skill is to dive in and start trying things out so this arrangement was my very first crack at it, so I've definitely got a loooong way to go but i'll enjoy the journey (as corny as that sounds)ericuk wrote:I wanted to not like it because I thought the symphonic part sounded slightly sythetic IMO (no offence) but I actually smiled when the rock dropped in because it sounded great!

- Thanks man! So the problem with a full version is I'm afraid of ruining the song. Well that's a bit dramatic, what I mean is the part of the song immediately following the YouTube-champ-Mila Kunis-sound-alike screaming "Oh my gosh" is hard for me to imagine any other way than that mean Godzilla bass haha Like the melody that leads up to it is strong enough to carry a symphonic arrangement but as for the Godzilla bass part, I'm concerned it would end up sounding like a "cheap version" the actual part.wizkeyzero wrote:Awesome work mate, loved it! - Thanks so much, anytime it's come on my iPod when I'm in the car I always have a hard time not just fast forwarding to where the drums kick in haha but it's always worth the wait, sounds more epic with the anticipation leading up to it!!soldoutactivist wrote:I was impressed from the start, but I was blow away when the classic rock kicked in.
