the grime LP's on rephlex confused everyone. there are people here in america that say loefah and kode 9 are grime, because the grime 2 LP told them so.
at some point a name's got to be chosen. for no other reason than sorting out all the confusion in the media. american media specifically. they love catch phrases. it makes the job of promoting this sound that much easier, if we can call both sides of this genre dubstep.

it's easier to get to the breakbeat fans through more breakbeat oriented sound and slowly giving them pure dubstep tunes between

agree that the scene defo needs more journalists - will diversify the thought and what is being written far more.

I've also noticed that Hotflush have had gigs all over the world, even playing soon in New York along with Search & Destroy. No doubt partly due to their excellent self promotion skills. Good work, genuinely take my hat off to you. I don't see getting Hatcha booked abroad.

Perhaps then, its fair to conclude that - believe it or not - people do know about the breakstep sound despite Martin not personally focussing on it in his spare time. The artists are getting bookings and representation. Vex'd for instance have had a number of articles in various magazines from UK to USA (although they are hardly breakstep).

Frankly, if you can't just focus on making good music rather than how much attention you think you deserve, maybe you should just start doing breaks full time...

You don't see Hatcha gettin a booking abroad? Maybe because he aint tried to get a booking abroad? Sure as hell, people would book him straight up! You can't knock trying/working hard to get somewhere - i know your on the same page with me on that.

Hmmm, just to chuck in my 2pence, i wasnt too moved by some of the tunes bein played at the last dmz i went to, just sounded like dubby-breakbeat, nothin real special, allthough it was a wicked nite and there is plenty of room to musically manouver, and dubstep has allways been a broad church. Keep those bangers comin...

i saw dubway's post about revealing our musical inspirations to each other, so here is my current recommendation to all those who enjoy hearing pure percussion:

Artist:

Albums: 'mel de cabra', and 'great mediterranean masters'

i discovered this music on a recent trip to Istanbul.

is a master of the 'darbuka', a north african percussion instrument traditionally made of clay that looks a bit like a djembe, but allows for finer drumming techniques. commonly used in arabic, and turkish music, the darbuka has a very tight, almost metallic quality to it's sound.

's latest recording, which is part of the 'great mediterranean masters' series is truly a masterpiece of contemporary percussionism, in the traditional hand played sense of course :p

beyond rythym,

makes the drum play melodies.

a must have album for percussion enthusiasts!

yeah gotta mix things up, keep it interesting. once it loses the element of surprise, once there's no longer that buz of hearing something new that completely catches you at unawares and makes you think fuck whats that tune i've gotta have it, then its a stagnant box like most other scenes out there.
