Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
You can tell its Subtractor, its so distinctive. I also love his hats and shakers as well though always perfect

Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
I have managed to get close to some metallic sounds, evidence is on the ol' SC if anyones interested, I also have a tune called insurrection that i put in the wips thread a bit ago but nobody understood it was meant to be similar to a coki tune but with my twist on it.

Does anybody got a list of he's newest songs?
I'm thinking about 2010 and 2011.
Peace

just made this wobble earlier today with subtractor... methinks it sounds something like coki or 50 Carrot... closest I could come at least.
Any suggestions?
I'll give a whirl at explaining it if anyone is interested

Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
I'd love some info on the subtractor patch. real close to that 50 carrot sound!
Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
sure thing... going back to what's been said in this thread, I made the patch with FM synthesis in subtractor. I started with a square wave in osc. 1 and adjusted the phase/waveform subtraction to get that soft ripping noise you hear in a lot of 50 Carrot tunes. Then I added in osc. 2, three octaves up from osc. 1, choosing a waveform that produces a metallic texture, and turned the mix knob to the left (this eliminates the metallic noise but allows for it to modulate osc. 1 if the FM value exceeds 0. I split the Filter 1 Freq. and Amp level modulation inputs on the back of Subtractor so that I could control the voltage using the rotaries on thor and fine-tuned them. I usually choose to route my synths into thor so that i can make use of the LFO waveforms and the fact that the LFO retriggers. Adjust filter, envelope, FM to taste and be sure to add chorus, detune, distort a bit, and add plently of reverb.

Subtractor, Notch filter. Dont sign lfo to freq unless you want it to sound like pure shit. Put in individual note lengths yourself and use the attack to control how the note comes in.
Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
what's the best way to utilize the notch filter?
It doesn't sound like much changes when I sweep the frequency
Also - hetttttty choon you got in your sig there bruv.

I Honestly cant put it in words. Anything I make in subtractor tends to be pure luck from fuckin' around for hours, try using the second filter with it.

Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
I had a similar question a while back. I'm mostly wondering about Spongebob, from what I've gathered he made that baseline from sampling the Spongebob laugh, and then pitching it really low. But my question is, how did he get such a powerful matching low end. Would a simple EQ boost and frequency splitting work? I've tried useing samples rather than synths to make weird midrange, but it's never really worked.
Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
Sound I went round 2 in subtractor today and routed LFO1 to amplitude for wobble action and used the notch filter to add a delayed "wibbles." I don't know what else to call them so I'll leave it at that. I am much more proud of my outcome than my first attempt as this one reminds me of a Jakes tune. Obviously it's not as clean (and I'm working on headphones
), but, hey, it's a WIP. Feedback greatly appreciated.
Oh also I fiddledeedee'd with making a kick and snare sample today, which I've never done before. The accompany the bass so feedback on them is much welcome, too.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I used osc. 10 on subtractor as the sub with multiple parametric EQ's to get rid of the high frequencies. Anyone else try this? It sounds pretty fat to me, but I'm a noob so not sure how it sounds to you guys.

Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
sounds aliright moonunit, but when i listen to coki, i have never though that it is one instance of subtractor.
save that patch.
duplicate device and tracks (and automation), differ eq of it, detune it slightly, change the octave.
so it gives the sound some harmony, obviously you dont want the synths at the same volume so bare that in mind just subtle tings in the background
edit - to be honest its all about automation.
and note input. when i'm going for a coki kinda sound i always make one shot sounds, then start playing around with it all.

latest bit i've made on this tip
[ignore loud kick, havn't got round to bouncing latest version]

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.
Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
Hell yeah, bruv. I got so excited when you mentioned more than one instance because I started to think, 'coki's wobbles have a sort of ghost to 'em.' The next sentence when you mention variation in amplitude from the original instance kangfirm'd it.
I like the end product in your demo.

Re: How does Coki make his basslines?
Been at it mad with subtractor and have discovered some helpful hints towards achieving the sound.
1. Coki favors certain waveforms. To my ear, they would appear to be 7, 9, and 10, as they all can produce glassy or metallic sounds. Probably waveform 11 plays a part as well seeing as it can produce soft vowel/formant sounds.
2. Phase offset modulation. Tunes like Goblin and Square Off have a really 'airy' quality to the wobbles, which can be duplicated by setting the phase offset of an oscillator to subtraction on certain waveforms, tuning the knob, and routing a shallow LFO to oscillate phase. Smother in reverb and you will have some serious beef to add as a layer in a bass line.
3. CV, CV, CV! Use multiple subtractor instances and wire control voltages across them to trigger different modulations on midi signal, LFO speed, you name it. I want to try and route 3 or 4 subtractors into Thor and use the step sequencer to control the timing and intensity of these control voltages so that I may create a more 'evolving/morphing' bass, but I hardly know where to begin.
I hope someone takes something useful away from this!

Have you seen this vid? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ws6_Rnu90
It's a very good starting point. Also, very slght yet very slow (so disgusting) FM helps getting it grittier. So might tube distortion

cyeah first thing I did with reason was wire that patch up when I saw the videoRmoniK wrote:Have you seen this vid? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ws6_Rnu90

reminds me that using the mod envelope to modulate the pitch of an oscillator is clutch too
