messed up tempo in a remix.. how can i fix it?

Post by dj Cappa » Thu Sep 08, 2011 8:23 pm

thanks a lot if you can help me,
anyways a few days ago i did a remix of katy perry's et. started off by dropping the acapella into ableton, which told me that the bpm was 120. from then on i went out with building the track, with my ableton tempo at 120 bpm and then vocal clip's at 120 bpm. i finished the song a few days later, and posted it when i was really tired and not thinking right.. when i listened to it the next fay i realised that the music was way out of sync with the vocals and after messing around with stuff unsuccessfully trying to get it to work, i googled the tempo for et and it came up as 76 bpm. ive tried a lot of things in ableton like changing the musics but not vocals tempo to 76 bpm, the music went with the vocals, but the music sounded terrible since it was built for 120 bpm.
please if someone could help me get everything in sync without ruining the song, itd be awesome! thanks!!

this is how it sounds now: Soundcloud

You could always try to mess with the phrasing and warping in the acapella and get it to match 120. That's what I would do anyhow. Or push the beat up to 152 and use the different warping techniques (beat, repitch, complex) in order to make it sound decent. Who knows, it could be on the money or even cooler sounding than before! If all else fails, you could always recreate the beat at a matching tempo. The first thing I would try would be warping the acapella to fit the song.

http://www.theelectronomist.com/ableton-warp-tutorial/

I even noticed this explains the trick I use to quickly warp tracks for DJ'ing in Live (Setting the initial warp marker, then going to the very end of the track and lining it up, so you don't have to go through and set a million markers). Hope this helps! I think this tutorial is written well-enough. If done correctly, you should be able to play your track at any tempo and the acapella will remain perfectly sync'd.

why not slow the vocal to 120? or from 76 down to 60 i guess.. then drop it back into the 120 beat... or raise the beats tempo incrementally and lower the vocal incrementally til they meet in the middle at a happy medium. I dunno... DJing meets production i reckon. good luck

Use a tap-tempo tool to find the tempo of the track you're remixing and then either change the tempo of your track or timestretch the one you're remixing so that it fits.
...in my opinion

Thanks, I made it myself ;-) (There are other ones with the same two frames, but I couldn't find any small enough for this forum)

Anywho, if it matches, but sounds too slow, try speeding the beat up or try messing with the -2/+2 buttons under 'Segment BPM' in your warp section. Whatever works for you, just don't give up and settle for less than desirable results!
