No no I think you're right, but it's the placebo effect. It's really hard to think your song sounds good when you're looking at a picture of a gray penis.

Soundcloud seems to really highlight how terrible my mixes are, making them either sound like too much high end, distortion in the high end, or too little sub.
I compared a mix on a few different speakers/headphones (yet to test it out on the hi fi) and it sounded like the bass was too loud, on soundcloud I could hardly hear the bass.

Nope, mixdown sounded fine on my studio machine but when I dumped it out to MP3 and listened back on my laptop it sounded like arse. Decided to sleep on it and have a crack at the mixdown against this morning with a fresh set of ears.

Feedback on the tune itself has been good so far (thanks to legend4ry & JFK), so reckon it's just a case of getting the mixdown to sit properly and should hopefully have it uploaded this evening.

Weird, whilst I was waiting to hear back from people on the composition/arrangement, I randomly started another project which shot off on it's own accord, so I have a 64 bar loop to turn into a tune once I've got the mixdown sorted on this one

Finally got the mixdown to a point where I'm happy with it :m:

Got up, made a tune, Icarus in my signature) sat here listening to Rufa's "Rock Bottom" remix, trying to motivate myself to do something else. It's hard in moods like this but meh. :D

So whats your plans production wise for the weekend?

I am going to work on this dub idea i've had in my head since outlook. - mainly a percussion thing. Any good tutorials/texts about percussion (especially shakers and tamburines) about?
I find it hard to make something rhytmic and groovey using one shots and i fail every time i try and use something from a break. I know about groove/quantiaztion and placing the hits outside the grid and all that. But i seem to fail every time no matter what. And all i want is a fucking groovey shaker 8)

I`m jamming at an outdoor Psy Trance party on Saturday.
2 sets
One of big-bass dub music 6:00 - 7:00 and
the other Dark psy at 3:30 - 5:30

Maybe finishing a tune to play tomorrow night, depends how I feel.
I`m quite looking forward to hearing my new tunes on a big system.
I`ll take some pics and upload on Monday.

Saturday will be spent doing some more work on the project I started randomly last week whilst waiting for feedback on the previous project (which has since gone up on Soundcloud  ). Sunday, going over to Serox' place to work on some 808 driven juke crossover shizzle.

Get yourself a few different percussion samples, different tablas/shakers etc, then put them into a multi sampler (Battery/FPC etc). Turn snap to grid off and just jam along to the click track recording a few times. Do it, bounce it, find the bits you like, delete the bits you don't. Repeat, layer, EQ and bounce.

Never thought about a multi sampler! thanks man - think it solves my problem as I really just want to jam out whats in my head. 8)

It was indeed. The one I completed, not the one I'm working on - that new one is called "Say No To Pizza"

Thanks man, it had a vocal in it at one point when I got stuck with some writers block, then once the vocal was added the rest of the tune came together really well, then at the end prior to mixdown I removed the vocal altogether

Mixdown took fucking time though, had about 15 different cracks at it, listening on like 3 different systems in my flat, then passing it people over AIM for feedback...was fun :corncry:

yeah I sometimes find it hard to decide if the vocals has its place in the song or not - It definitely would be cool with some vocals though :W:

15?!? wow man you really work hard on your tracks, but I guess thats what it takes to make it sound as you want. I don't have the patience to mixdown thay many times  but then again I have like 150 unfinished projects and 5 finished with acceptable mixdowns etc....

TBH, it really helped workflow to develop a track around an element that ended up being left out of the finished product. Meant I was working with a hook, so could structure around it more naturally, as opposed to structuring around an emptiness, if that makes sense?

One of the main reasons there is fuck all on my Soundcloud. I'll finish a tune, bounce, listen back and be all happy, then FUCK THAT SNARE SOUNDS OFF and it's back into the DAW again

^ totally agree

I was working on a Don Goliath remix the other day and designed the entire track around the vocal.
In the end the vocal annoyed me a bit so I deleted it.
:o :o
what is this track lying beneath the vocals?

It does - its an interesting way to work, but I would defnitely have kept the version with the element you build the tune around (i'm guessing you do that as well?) as i tend to change opinoin on the tune every 5 minutes

Yes exactly  but one thing is quality control towards soundcloud which is a good thing - another is quality control on WIPs which I would sometimes really like to do a bit less as I would finish alot more tunes. and i think you progress so much more when you actually finish something - even if its not mixed perfectly etc.

I have a workaround for this - I utilise Ctrl + N in FLStudio, which saves a new version of the tune whilst preserving previous incarnations, then have a copy of FL Notebook on the Master channel on the mixer. Every new version I make, I make a note as to what has changed etc etc, so when the project loads I can check through the notes and see what previous versions have what bits on them. Helps organise things a bit better.

Yeah, for WIP I never put them on SC. I'll bounce copies out with very rough mastering jobs on them, but they'll only be for listening back on my main system or else winging across to people over IM for feedback. Soundcloud IMO is way too cluttered with half finished projects that aren't quite there for my liking.

I'll have to try and see if Ableton has a similar feature, could be quite useful. Don't tink the notepad is possible but it could be solved with a normal notepad program I guess :)

yeah I can tell from your soundcloud  I only do that occasionally if I need to share it as I dont use AIM or anything, acutally the only thing I have on SC at the moment is some soundscape thing I made which isn't even a tune yet.
But yes, it is - soooo many previews and what not.
