Accidental Excision Bass in FM8

Post by MadSci » Fri Sep 09, 2011 3:02 am

After seeing all the great sounds people are making in FM8 recently, I decided to take a break with Massive and finally see what all the fuss is about with this synth. After like 45 minutes of connecting operators to other operators and messing with the filters, it started making this noise. I thought it was pretty interesting and very reminiscent of the datsik/excision sound.

What do you guys think? If anyone wants I could probably go into more detail about whats going on. I guess I could post the patch, but again I made this sound by accident so don't just expect to be able to load it up and start making tunes.

Yeah, I'd like to see how you have FM8 set up for that. Sounds cool.

I was gonna attempt to explain it, maybe with some screen shots, but i realized i don't know enough about FM8 to make it more than some tedious "click this, then that, then plug that in there, set that to that value..." sooooo here's the patch.

let me know if you find it useful at all.

This patch is amazing. I am way noob when it comes to FM8, but I am learning Sytrus. For the benefit of FL users everywhere, would you be inclined to discuss with me the components of this patch?

FM8 is pretty straight forward for getting these sounds. With a bit of messing and research you should get there quite quickly.

Don't know about FM8 but isn't the basic principle the same in every synthesizer?

I can see that after checking out the patch. He didn't even touch the envelopes! I feel like I always take the harder route for everything I do

If your talking about other fm synths, then yeah im sure the concept is the same. i would say though, that FM is much different than using thor or massive, the main idea with those synths is taking waveforms, combining them, effecting them and running them through filters - for the most part. when i want to make a snarling bass in massive i can just automate the wavetable position on that waveform. In fm8, if im correct, the basic concept is taking one waveform and using the frequency of a different waveform to change the first one.

And again, sorry but i cant really explain whats going on here or try to help translate the concept to another synth. this patch was made literally 30 - 45 minutes after opening fm8 for the first time, i just thought the sound was nice and that it could be useful on here - i lurk alot, but rarely contribute. honestly i haven't even touched the patch since i posted it here.

thank you everybody for the positive feedback on this post though
