complete overreaction. It's way out of whack if you can be out of prison in 6 months for laundering millions but put in prison for years just for "trolling".
At the most it should be a slap on the wrist style response - staggered fines and temporary internet disconnection would be a far better place to start. Jail is for really serious stuff, not a place to put people who are simply just dickheads and not really much else.

if you can't handle trolling stay off the internet plain and simple
to the argument of people grieving on a website getting trolled, why don't they just keep it offline like in the olden days before all this social networking crap, you know that actual social part
far too many sensitive people who just now seemed to get online (and probably have no place online) and want the internet regulated because they can't differentiate between reality and online

So when you went on the production forum and shared your feelings with us about your dog passing away, which is something I remember at the time as being particularly heart wrenching for you and for those of us who care about you (myself included), if you had got trolled in that thread you would have been all like "Yeah, fair enough its the internet" I suppose?

And when you shared a similar experience with us on the same board about one of your friends passing away (the guy who was then other half of Deadly Habit originally I think? Correct me if Im wrong...) If you had been trolled in that thread would you have been ok with it??

there is a vast difference between someone trying to get a rise out of you online behind anonymity and someone doing it in real life
there doesn't need to be any laws or regulation just because people can't differentiate between the two

that and sites have report buttons and user terms of agreement for a reason. your actions are accountable to that, not to the law as it's a slippery slope as to what could be considered trolling and these articles/stories on the internet 90% of the time are done by clueless morons who have no idea about the net and read by people who are equally clueless

Because *everyone* lives on the Internet. It's not some elitist safezone for people that are in on the joke - it's an extension of the real world. You've gotta treat strangers, especially strangers who are on a memorial page for their dead teenage daughter with the same respect you'd show them in the street.

Not everyone logs straight onto 4Chan when they open their browser. Most people go to the BBC, Google, Facebook, Ebay and Amazon... it's all fair game out here in the forum badlands, but you can't take that kinda gunslinging into the big City, cowboy... you'll get yourself arrested.

i think i'd understand all of this more if the guy 'trolling' actually had some kind of connection with the family. can't really grasp how anyone can get so emotionally distraught over some completely random person posting something horrible on the internet (although it's obviously impossible to properly judge this kind of situation without being in it yourself)

to carry on the tradition of weird internet/realworld analogies, isn't that like saying it's okay to commit crimes in the wilderness or areas where the police have no real power, just because it's not on the high street where all the nice shops are and the 'normal' people go?

Err, sorry, I just got carried away in a figure of speech; it wasn't really a proper analogy.. don't read too much into it!

But there are areas of the Internet... here, for example, where you have to be a registered user to see the board (or, IMO, anywhere you wouldn't find without opening your e-mail and personal social media pages) that are basically free-for-all... if you post something offensive in here, it's my fault for being in a forum marked NSFW. We're all pretty thick skinned and if anyone was too fragile to deal with it, they'd get (rightfully) torn to shreds... but that really isn't the same as a place like Facebook, where everyone is... especially a Facebook page created by the people you're intending to make miserable.

You can say what you want in the privacy of your own home, in the pub, on a forum, on Facebook with your mates or on the streets to the entire public practically anywhere for all I care... but you really can't walk into a grieving family's life for the sole purpose of upsetting them even more about their teenage daughter's death. You can't specifically target them. It doesn't matter whether you post them a letter, knock on their door, call them on the telephone, send them an e-mail or post on their Facebook wall... whoever would do such a thing anywhere deserves to be taught at least a small lesson (and 10ish weeks is a small lesson) by a fair and, more importantly, decent society.
