Unusual Pets

Post by Love » Thu Sep 15, 2011 4:41 am

I would love to have a pet skunk. Is it inhumane to remove the glands which produce the stinky scent? I can't imagine myself being bombarded with that spray from my pet everyday I came home from work.

Do you have, had, or want any unusual exotic pets?

In the US it's standard for domesticated skunks to have their scent gland removed, however skunk ownership isn't legally in every state.

In the UK, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 has made it illegal to remove their scent gland.

Some animals aren't technically "illegal" simply because their so ridiculous no law has had to be passed about it... One of these, in my area, is a Hynea. I did a lot of research a few years back because I wanted one so bad. I found a company that export extremely exotic animals: Ostritches, Kangaroos, etc... Anything really... What made it unrealistic for me, was, and I don't remember the exact number, but I think Hyenas ate like 40lbs of meat a day... Which, isn't much... a small animal or two in the wild... But as a pet?? BUYING 40lbs a day worth of meat to feed it? You'd have to be rich. I was not, and am not. No Hynea for me.

Unless the animal has had tens of thousands of years of domestication I think it is extremely cruel to keep 'unusual pets'. Not the OP or anything, but these wankers that buy a sloth and keep it in cage with a badly nailed together climbing frame... selfish pricks.

And also, it's been scientifically proven that domestic dogs are the best pet in the world*.

I am watching my friends Betta..and it just makes me sad
because everytime I switch out his water, he gets all excited and makes a big new nest...

But I can't handle a batch of 500 baby bettas..
I'd have to build a wall of bubbles to hold them all..

Fuck you, cats. Fuck cats. Cats enslave humans and make me sneeze.

Dogs evolved side by side with Man and treat us differently to any other animal. They know how to read our emotions and recognise our faces even more reliably than their own (they use scent for other dogs and rarely even look at the face). When a human pets a dog they get the same chemical rush as when they cradle a baby... doesn't happen with cats.

Dogs fucking rule.

This guy with cats....

I saw some cockfaced rapper on MTV cribs with a tiger chained to his yard.
I bet he's home like 2 months of the year at most.
Pointless status symbol imo.
